Waves Pummel Balboa Pier; Flooded Streets on Balboa Peninsula, Newport Beach

Around 3:30 p.m. today I walked out of my Balboa Peninsula bungalow and ventured through ankle-deep (and higher) water to the Balboa Pier. The cold winds whipped the rain into a horizontal assault that nearly stole my hat and stung my face.

​Closer to the ocean, grains of sand smacked my cheeks. One fat, furious swell followed another, with the surf splashing the pier's walkway.
