Around 3:30 p.m. today I walked out of my Balboa Peninsula bungalow and ventured through ankle-deep (and higher) water to the Balboa Pier. The cold winds whipped the rain into a horizontal assault that nearly stole my hat and stung my face.
Closer to the ocean, grains of sand smacked my cheeks. One fat, furious swell followed another, with the surf splashing the pier's walkway.

More pics after the jump.
Three young men walked out onto the pier--and then smartly turned around.
