--Then-Sheriff Mike Carona speaking to a confidante without knowing he's being recorded during an August 2007 meeting and bitching that George Jaramillo, his onetime best friend and second in command of the Orange County Sheriff's Department, could have taken over the agency if he'd obeyed Carona's wishes. All of Carona's inner circle--Jaramillo, Don Haidl and Joe Cavallo--confessed to criminal activity. Carona continues to claim he's innocent of bribery and public corruption charges.
