There's no Tex in Teixeira

Categories: Sports

pMLB2-2432923dt.jpgOthers on this blog will undoubtedly dissect your Anaheim Angels' embarrassing flameout against the Boston Red Sox, so I'll just focus on the linguistic disaster that is the Halos' radio announcers (excluding the always-classy Jose Mota). One of them--Rory Markas? Terry Smith? Steve Physioc? Maybe even Rex Hudler?--keeps insisting on calling free-agent-to-be first baseman Mark Teixeira "Tex." This despite the fact his only connection with the Lone Star State is playing with the Texas Rangers, where he's so beloved that fans at their ballpark vociferously boo Teixeira every time his name is mentioned. "Tex," even though his last name cannot be possibly pronounced this way--the proper Portuguese pronunciation is "Tei-shair-ah," something all major league broadcasters I've ever heard have never butchered. And, even if someone did, they'd probably pronounce it "Teix" because THERE'S AN I BEFORE THE X. "Tex" is impossible. Who knows if he'll re-sign with the Angels (note to Arte Moreno: dump Vlad Guerrero, who's getting old and couldn't hit in the clutch even if he was driving a standard car), but the only solace Angels fans will have is that casual observers will have one less reminder of how Mickey Mouse the Angels still remain.
