Cal State Fullerton To Bring Football Back?

Late last week, Cal State Fullerton issued a survey to gauge student interest in the school reinstating its laughable football squad, which disbanded in 1992 to a massive yawn from Orange County. Even more hilarious is the website, Bring Back Titan Football, which really believes interest in the sport at Cal State Fullerton is so prevalent that they're trying to mobilize alumni and students to pressure administrators into spending millions for a squad that probably won't compete above Division I-AA and probably lower. They even try to cite academic studies arguing that a football team would bring more money than building on their Big West champion cagers (the website has obviously never heard of Duke University). Hey, pigskin pendejos: methinks the average Titan would prefer an alleviation of their horrific parking situation instead of a fumbling, bumbling gridiron 11.

you do not credible whatsoever. do you know how much revenue is made at football games? they could easily pay back the money that was borrowed. but we have go by the title 9 which means a balanced money towards women and men sports. thats why we can not afford it on our own. and by the way i guess I'm a pendejo too because my father was mexican. so what gives a hell what the color of our skin i thought we got rid of discrimination during the cival rights movement. thats bad character.. and really low.. but whatever...
really now? every college should have the oppurtunity to play D-1 football. Taking that away is just cruel and ignorant because one person making it to the NFL of fulerton is a huge accomplishment

Gustavo, If you remember 1992, then you "Remember the Titans." There was a $750K budget cut that was announced late 1991 and the administration announced that football was going to be dropped in 1992. Coach Gene Murphy who was only concerned about the being of his players, gave them the release option. Only that the administration reversed the call a few weeks later. The damage was already being done as some key players defected. We were given our program back to compete in the fall of 1992 only to be told that was it for us. A multi-mullion dollar stadium and years of going through the loop holes got to be used for one Titan Football Season. CSUF administration dropped football in bad faith with the city of Fullerton who forked out the money to build the stadium. The big donors and boosters also exile from supporting football, athletics and the school. The university gave the boosters the impression that basketball would become a dominant sport after football and that more funding would go into the operations of basketball. Lies! Lies! Lies! Basketball went into a tailspin of losing for over a decade and attendance went down to an all-time low. Even with Bob Burton turning the program around and made the NCAA this year, attendance had rarely topped 1,000. Gustavo, I am sure that you remember all of these just like you "Remember the Titans." While a few of us are working hard to revive something that was meaningful to the students, alumni and community, it is easy for you to bash us with little or no cause at all. However I would like to thank you that our effort was worth your time to response back. I am sure that you "Remember the Titans" when we finished 1st or 2nd throughout the 80's? We were ranked in the Top-20 AP Poll, played on national TV many times and came to close to upset a couple of giants?
Gustavo, I think you need to take another look. CSUF sits smack dab in the middle of one of the riches places on earth. There are now 180,000 alums of CSUF and most of them live locally (within the distribution area of the OC Weekly). The High school student / athletes of this area are of such high caliber that virtually every University in the country comes here to recruit. CSUF is supposed to be a place where local student/athletes can further themselves.This is true for baseball players, basketball players and others.Why should there be descrimination against guys that play football? Football is affordable, football does raise the perception of the university, it does increase community and alumni giving. I say it is an opportunity that should not be ignored or pushed aside as "laughable".
Dear Gustavo, I am one of the pigskin pendejos trying to bring back football and many of us are Mexicanos. One of the reasons we are trying to bring back football at the 1-AA,(not 1-A like in the past)level is that there is a void in O.C since no other schools have division 1 football. Gustavo, there is a wealth of talent that is here and an increasing amount of latinos who are now coming through the high schools.many of them can't play at U.S.C or U.C.L.A but they could play at CSF at the 1-AA level.Pro football will never come back to O.C but a college team playing in beautiful Titan stadium would not only help elevate the visibility of the university but also help cultivate a greater sense of community. Imagine all the families showing up to watch their sons play football(not futbol) and the familias being exposed to the college environment and telling their ninos and ninas that this is a place that you can come to school if you stay in school and get good grades. Already 28% of the students are latino and this demographic will only increase.A friend of mine who teaches at Anaheim high school spoke to the football coach and he was totally excited about our push because he said that many of his kids could play 1-AA football but there are no schools around here to play at except at the JC's. And yes,Gustavo there are a number of studies that do show that donations rise with football programs,just go ask James Doti,president at Chapman university.And they play at the D-III level which is equivalent to a Mater Dei or good high school program.And as far as the funding of this we are not asking the administration for money because they don't have it so we plan to ask the students through a fee referendum of about 50 dollars per semester which like all the other sports includes free admission for the students. As far as the parking, I am not sure when you were last on campus but we have two new parking structures and a third which will be built soon and the students pay 144 per semester for parking. I am a student and I will happily pay for football because I see it not as a fee but instead as an investment in my school and community. join us Gustavo and together we can make it happen.
