Survey Says...Not Much

Categories: Elections

We recently heard from a reader in Santa Ana who received a copy of the "Republican Party Census Document," along with an introductory letter from the RNC stating that "your answers will represent the views and opinions of ALL Republican voters living in your voting district...Unless we hear from YOU, we will not have an accurate BLUEPRINT -- a full legislative agenda and campaign plan -- and a unified Republican Party.""

Problem is, our reader is not now nor has she ever been a registered Republican. However, it's hard to imagine the survey actually matters in determining a platform, since every question is so ridiculously skewed. A few samples, after the jump...

Bear in mind that these are multiple choice questions, with the answer options being yes, no, and undecided.

"Should Republicans do everything they can to prevent liberal Democrats from repealing the USA Patriot Act and other important laws that help our intelligence agencies protect America?"

"Do you agree that we must stop illegal immigration?"

"Should Republicans fight for a balanced budget?"

"Do you think U.S. troops should have to serve under United Nations' commanders?"

"Should Republicans in Congress oppose the new, wasteful government spending programs proposed by the Democrats and their leaders, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid?"

They really could have saved a lot of time by simply asking one question -- should the Republican Party take the same positions it always has in recent memory? I suspected for a moment that this census might actually be a fake put out by Democrats in order to scare undecided voters, but no, you can see part of it online at www.gop.com/2008census.

The best part of the survey, however, comes at the end: "Will you join the Republican National Committee by making a contribution today?" The reader is given the choice of three options..

-"Yes, I support the RNC and am enclosing my most generous contribution...[possible amounts are then listed]"

-"Yes, I support the RNC, but I am unable to participate at this time. However, I have enclosed $11 to cover the cost of tabulating my survey"

-"No, I favor electing liberal Democrats over the next ten years." [eleven bucks keeps that from happening? What a deal!]

We don't know how they're getting names and addresses of non-Republican voters, but word to the wise, RNC -- the business-as-usual slant probably isn't going to win any of them over.
