  • More immigrants than ever: Bilingual folks ain't so special anymore. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that nearly one in five people living in the United States speaks a language other than English. The number of immigrants in the country is at an all time high at 37.5 million, according to 2006 data released by the bureau, and our state is, as Cesar Millan would say, pack leader: "California led the nation in immigrants, at 27 percent of the state's population, and in people who spoke a foreign language at home, at 43 percent."
  • Learn them some math! Recently, $2 million in state aid was taken from the Santa Ana Unified School District for wrongfully implementing a class-size reduction program in elementary schools. Now the district says it will lose another $3.2 million for overstating the number of special ed. students in its summer programs. The Times reports that the error is tied to two employees who multiplied the wrong numbers...
  • Street vs. Moorlach - Nobody really wins round 1: The Orange County Board of Supervisors didn't take away Treasurer-Tax Collector Chriss Street's investment powers Tuesday like Supervisor John Moorlach wanted. But Street's not off the hook. He gets to keep his authority till Oct. 16, when the board will vote again on the subject.
  • Jon Stewart, again: Rumor has it that Jon Stewart will be asked to host the Oscars again, even though he brought in fewer viewers than the likes of Ellen DeGeneres and Chris Rock.
