- Best medicine you can buy?: Last November, Dr. Prem Reddy—chairman of Prime Healthcare—gave $100,000 to the Oakland charter school created by Attorney General Jerry Brown and—shazam!—three months later, last February, Reddy won AG approval of a sweet hospital deal. Brown said the 100 G's meant nothing to him. Daniel Costello of the LA Times reports today that the AG's staff has blocked Reddy's latest takeover attempt at the nonprofit Anaheim Memorial Medical Center. Yo, Reddy: Perhaps you should have paid another "meaningless" $100,000.
Weed Whackers: Costa Mesa police responding to a domestic-violence call got a tip that someone was growing marijuana in a house on the 900 block of Senate Street. Sure enough, cops found 100 plants and arrested Chad Hoffman, 33. The Daily Pilot says Hoffman was sent to the OC Jail on $20,000 bail. No word on what happened to the plants.- Tricky Dickster felt no love: New revelations from the old Nixon White House papers show that the disgraced president fretted endlessly about why nobody believed he was cuddly, according to the Associated Press. In 1970, a frustrated Nixon “wrote an 11-page, single-spaced memo detailing his acts of kindess to staff and strangers and expressing that he was getting no credit for being 'nicey-nice.'” Other records show Nixon saying it was a badge of honor that, unlike other politicians, he didn't fret about "the whole warmth business."
- Dog house for forced pet-sterlization plan: The Register's Abigail Palmer writes from Sacramento that “a bill that galvanized—and divided—pet owners across the state was sidelined Wednesday because of the intense passions it incited.” But, say Palmer, “the Orange County woman who helped write the plan to sterilize virtually all of the state's dogs and cats was undaunted.” The legislature could reconsider the plan in January.
Got your goat? The Coastline Pilot editorializes—a firm yes!—on the need for Laguna Beach goat herds to help prevent fires in OC's best cozy little MTV town. City Manager Ken Frank tells the paper that “unlike human work crews, the goats are efficient.” Hey, Ken: And you don't have to give them a lunch break, pay them a decent wage or listen to the complaints of black sheep either.- Dump the doctor: Register editorial writer Alan Bock says it's time to kill the nation's surgeon general position. This in the wake of news that W ordered former Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona to credit him three times per page of every speech. (Bushy must be channeling the Dickster.) The fiasco has Bock writing, “Let this useless position die of the boredom all these national nannies have induced in the general public.”
