Beyond Wonderland

March 17, 2012

Nos Events Center

On Saturday, Insomniac Events hosted a very special edition of a sold-out Beyond Wonderland at the San Bernardino NOS Events Center. Beyond Wonderland marks the start of festival season in the dance community with Ultra Music Festival in Miami next week and then Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas in June. Returning for its third year, it not only landed on Saint Patrick's day, but also on an evening filled with rain and stormy weather that's usually unheard of in Southern California.

Larkin Grimm On Her Latest Album 'Soul Retrieval' (Catch Her at UCI This Weekend!)

On Saturday the Acrobatics Everyday crew throws on another inspired concert at UC Irvine, with Old Time Relijun member Arrington de Dionyso making another appearance after coming through 2010's edition of the Open Melody festival.

De Dionyso's tour partner is the powerful Larkin Grimm, whose third album Parplar we reviewed a few years back.  Her latest, the self-released Soul Retrieval, is another lovely effort -- featuring among other guests legendary producer Tony Visconti -- and we caught up with her on the road by phone, with background interjections from her young son Otis:More >>

Respect Your Elders: Top Five Veteranos at the Punk Rock Picnic

TSOL back in the day
The 4th annual OC Punk Rock Picnic is happening this Saturday, and the lineup of bands is epic. Six stages will showcase a few foundational American regional hardcore bands, as well as young up-and-comers that keep the scene alive today.
But first, we must pay our respect to our elders. Here are five locally grown bands that made their mark in the early '80s. (And yes, they are worth taking a break from drinking in the parking lot, I promise.)

Friday means another visit from the characters in The Adolescents at Alex's Bar in Long Beach--and why not, given how often they've made it a home away from home (or alternately, close to home?). But there's a further mix of familiar characters on the bill: Woodland Hills' The Grim are approaching 30 years, more or less, of cranking the amps and letting fly with punk's-not-dead bravado. Agents have diplomatic immunity?
Friday kicks off the weekend with Agent Orange ripping into things at Friar Tuck's Bar and Grille in Pomona. It may seem odd to have a now-veteran act be our Locals Only focus this week, but Mike Palm has always been about the area he grew up and started his band in. Their earliest efforts will always be the ones people remember, mostly thanks to "Bloodstains" getting extensive KROQ airplay, but they have kept the flag flying ever since. The band returned to action a bit thanks to last year's Halloween single, and Palm and Co. still kick out the surf-punk jams live.

Friday kicks off a busy weekend, first with Devils Brigade playing Alex's Bar in Long Beach with Roger Miret and the Disasters and Viva Hate. Devils Brigade just released their debut album, but it's been 10 years in the making--as Rancid fans well know. The group is a long-running side project of that band's Matt Freeman and Tim Armstrong, with DJ Bonebrake on drums. They're one of our featured artists in the music section this week, and no doubt Freeman is as fiery a fellow on the page as he is onstage.
