Yokohama, Japan

No show today, but we attended the going-away party at the Moon Cafe, a diner run by Mooneyes--a legendary SoCal custom racing brand. There was free barbecue, but nothing was vegan, so I drank Chu-Hi and ate potato chips.

I made friends with a guy named Corner from Sweden and two couples from Rome. Everyone was very cool and for the first time I found myself wanting to return next year not just as a musician but as a person with new friends.

By the time we assembled outside the cafe for a group shot, I was drunk. See also: The Heathens Tour Diary, Pt.1: OC Punks Encounter Japanese Bidets The Heathens Tour Diary, Pt. 2: We're Kinda Big in Japan

The Heathens, the band I play bass in, went to Japan. Here is part two of my tour diary. Part three is being optioned for Hollywood as "The Hangover IV."

Yokohama, Japan
Three (or four?) swigs of Suntory from Al's flask and I was ready to go. This time, I decided to leave the mask at home, although I did get an amazing picture of me wearing one in front of a large Christmas tree at the mall. If I was the type of guy to send Christmas cards, the photo after the jump would definitely be it.

The Heathens, a quartet I play bass in, recently performed in Japan. You are probably asking yourself one important question: "Why?"

Yes, it's true, the Heathens can't draw 15 people in the band's native region of Orange County, but we've been at this for nearly a decade (with about a seven-year gap when I wasn't in the band) and when you hit the 10-year anniversary you are allowed to do whatever you want, regardless of how financially irresponsible the idea seems.

More specifically, we went to Japan to play the 22nd Annual Yokohama Hot Rod Custom Show 2013, sponsored by Mooneyes. We were offered free hotel rooms, which is pretty much all an unknown band needs to get on an 11-hour flight. Naturally, we said yes, even though the plane ticket money probably should have gone to my student loans. If that ain't rock 'n' roll, I don't know what is.

With common sense lost in the couch cushions at our Santa Ana rehearsal space, singer/guitarist Gabe Griffin, guitarist Al "Function" James, drummer Craig Waters and I boarded planes (Gabe flew separately) to Narita International Airport for four shows in Yokohama and the hope that maybe we could pick up a few more in Tokyo.

Irvine City Council is Scared of the Big Bad Vans Warped Tour

great park.jpg
This is a place for families, not a haven for the great unwashed!
Just days before the Vans Warped Tour steamrolls into the Great Park, Irvine City Council members are jumping up to say "not in my backyard!"

Following Tuesday's council meeting, it was reported that council members representing the safest city in America are having some serious objections to the festival, held on June 21. Councilman Jeffrey Lalloway apparently used his ace Googling skills to look up festival headliners like Anti-Flag, and found the band's songs like "Fuck Police Brutality" to be offensive.

"That's crossing the line," Lalloway says. "We need to have a family friendly venue out there."

Old 97s at Antone's

On Wednesday, March 16, I picked up my wristband at 9 a.m. at the Convention Center and went to my first show. It was an awareness-raiser for the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, Sea Now.

Ironically, they have stopped the whaling in Japan. They do great work trying to save a part of the world that they care about. Before me, a band from LA played, Blueblood. Snare, bass drum, acoustic and steel/electric. They were very compelling, electric folk. Their new record, Reverse the Curse, is being mixed now. Look for them in OC at some point.

Traveling across the West for three days. Listening to Mexican Radio by Wall of Voodoo, Phil Alvin Live at the Redwood, The Plugz. CNN on the radio. Endless drive. Lots of towns dying, broken houses falling down, people still living in them. Poverty and depression. Sad how America is falling apart.

Finally today got to the Texas hill country. Passing bands' vans pulling trailers, and then, at last, Austin!

Arizona!
I'm in Texas somewhere. Tomorrow, we arrive in Austin. It's the 25th year of SXSW. I think I've done at least 10 of those. But all I can think about is Japan. When I get to Austin, I'm sure I'll get more in the groove; I'm just not in the mood right now.

Just stopped in Casa Grande, Arizona. The GPS (Gremlin Positioning Satellite) kept telling me to turn right and go to Mexico, but I stayed on the 10. Traveling with my Memphis friend, Raven.
