Ultra or EDC: What's the Better EDM Festival?

Gary Royale

Ultra Music Festival has been considered the largest electronic dance music festival in the world. It's won the International Dance Music Award for "Best Music Event" for six years, only losing this year to Tomorrrowland in Belgium. Even the Ibiza DJ Awards has called it the "Best International Dance Music Festival." But is it really all it's hyped up to be? Sure, it has the luxury of taking place during the Winter Music Conference, the only place in the world where you will see artists, DJs, execs, promoters and fans all in one city celebrating their passion for the same music. It unites people from over 70 different countries in one city, but are they really there for UMF? Or are the surrounding parties like the Swedish House Masquerade, Juicy Beach Pool Parties and Yacht soirees where it's really at?  And is all this greatness at Ultra really as epic as Insomniac Event's Electric Daisy Carnival?

Even Duff McKagan Has an Opinion on the Sac Kings Moving to Anaheim

Categories: tough choices
Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan tells ESPN readers in his column yesterday, "Stand up for your team, Sacramento!"

He begins,
You could say that I am a sore loser, but I really come to this topic as a citizen who sees the importance of local economies staying local. I am also a fan who has seen the darkness that the NBA--and its teams' owners--can dispense on us loyal dorks . . . you know, the ones who buy tickets, jerseys, beer and parking. But sometimes, that is just not enough.

Backstreet Boys AJ McLean Checks Himself Into Rehab

Categories: tough choices
Well, things looked bright for the Backstreet Boys. They were slated to co-headline with New Kids on the Block on tour, including a performance at the Honda Center July 6. Despite their best efforts, TMZ reported that 33-year old AJ McLean is "out of control" and has checked himself into rehab. It wouldn't be the first time, either; back in 2001 and 2002, he sought treatment for alcohol and cocaine abuse. Will this affect the tour? McLean told MTV that going to rehab will not affect the rest of the band's tour, but we aren't convinced.

Robert Plant Is Not Into Zeppelin Reunion

Categories: tough choices
Yes, we all love Robert Plant, but you can't forgive him for leaving Zeppelin to go his own way. He's done well in his nearly 30-year solo career, but we want a Zeppelin reunion! It's comparable to the Smiths' status, except Plant isn't as weird and vengeful as Moz. In the new issue of Rolling Stone, Plant explains that he is unwilling to get back with the band after their reunion concert four years ago. More »

Jared Watson of the Dirty Heads' Five Best Songs To Get Stoned To

Jared Watson, the lead singer of the Dirty Heads, makes no bones about his bands' uh, appreciation for cannabis and variations thereof. So is pot integral to the Dirty Heads' sound and their creative process? "Definitely yes," Watson says in a phone interview. "When we were younger and listening to music and listening to a lot of reggae, part of that was smoking a lot of weed, going to high school. That comes hand in hand and was definitely a big influence." Find out what songs Watson considers the best to listen to while stoned after the jump, and watch out for the full interview in the coming weeks to preview their show at the OC Fair in July.

Sure, at first glance, these shows tonight don't appear to have a lot in common with each other. And uh, well, maybe they don't. But they both have strong local ties, which is potentially the most important thing.
