Black Star: We Break Down Mos Def and Talib Kweli's Brilliance

Black-Star-cover.jpg
Hip-hop's history might be strewn with many more notable groups than duos, but time and time again, a couple of guys are able to come together and blow everyone to smithereens. So many great twofers have existed in rap: Eric B. & Rakim, Outkast, Blackalicious, Atmosphere, and Gang Starr.

In 1998, Mos Def and Talib Kweli joined this eminent club by collaborating under the moniker of Black Star for the simply titled Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star. Sure, this union might not have had the star power of that Jay-Z/Kanye record from earlier this year (say, whatever came of that?), but creatively, the collaboration paid off very well. In Black Star's wake, Def and Kweli have sporadically re-teamed for about a dozen other projects. On Thursday night, the two MCs play Club Nokia in Los Angeles with Orgone (Black Star were supposed to hit House of Blues in Anaheim on Nov. 3, but "unforeseen circumstances" sunk that show and others on the same tour), so let's devote a moment to revisiting what made this debut such a gem.

Why We Damn Sure Respect Girls, Even Though They Fetishize Stupid, Clichéd Love Songs

Categories: show of the day

Sandy Kim
Never did decide how I felt about Girls' Father, Son, Holy Ghost, the San Francisco band's latest album, but I damn sure respect it.

Unlike so many of his peers, Christopher Owens has the chops and vision to pull off his nostalgia fetish; not just to approximate the sound of his forbears but approximate their songs, too. The problem is, an approximation is what it is. That can be intoxicating on its own: just for its accuracy, "Honey Bunny" is one of his many thrilling Beach Boys impressions. Though it switches angles a lot melodically, its hooks have a warm familiarity, down to the ending that repeats the final line three times: "And you'll be the girl that I love!"

TONIGHT: Andre Nickatina at the Grove of Anaheim

Nickatina.jpg
The list of slick- tongued superstars to come out of the Bay Area is pretty lengthy. You've got your Tupacs, your Too $horts, E-40s and MC Hammers. But one name that you habitual Power 106 and K-Day listeners better recognize is Andre Nickatina. After two decades,  his vulgar and vivid flows have sparked over a dozen underground albums and sold-out shows throughout the West Coast. His next stop: The Grove of Anaheim. We suggest you be there.

TONIGHT & THIS WEEKEND: The Killingtons at Alex's Bar and the Glass House

killingtonsocw.jpg
The Weekly and the Killingtons, taking it back to 2000.
A few weeks ago, we checked back in with JK Thompson, Christopher Muench and Mitch Townsend of the recently (and briefly?) reunited Killingtons.

The Long Beach-based band once played with bands that have gone on to become big household names, like Jimmy Eat World, New Found Glory, Sonic Youth and the Get Up Kids, but the Killingtons ended up disbanding after a 10-year run some time in 2005.

Lucky for us, they've decided to reunite for a too-brief, two show run starting tonight at Alex's Bar. After the jump: Full show info and the Killingtons' music video for "Best I Know," filmed in the summer of 1999 in Long Beach and Fullerton.

The Littlest Viking at Bull Bar, Long Beach

TLV500.jpg

Ask guitarist Ruben Cortez of Whittier's the Littlest Viking to deconstruct his music and he'll flash a boyish smile and tell you he simply writes pop songs.

"I could play all of our songs as pop-punk versions," he says.

Never mind that the music is instrumental, and laden with math rock sensibilities, vacillating between angular rhythms and sugary sweet melodies sandwiched between as many thematic changes as one song can reasonably be expected to hold, leading me to suspect that Cortez might be speaking with an overly glib tongue.

Show of the Day: '80s vs '90s DJ Battle Royale, Detroit Bar, Costa Mesa

Detroit Bar-80sv90.jpg
Have you ever heard the phrase "don't judge an event by it's flier"? Well, we're asking you to take that philosophy into account as you decide whether to drop by tonight's '80s vs. '90s DJ Battle Royale at Detroit Bar. We're holding out some hope that it'll be a little more exciting than a throw down between Boy George and Color Me Badd. Toss in some Nirvana and A Flock of Seagulls and you've got yourself one hell of a random club night.

Fortunately, our empirical evidence tells us that both teams have some booty-shaking hip-hop and electro-pop classics in their arsenal. Watch as Colossal KNXN, Y.O.O.K.S. and Nicky Savage spin Reagan-Era wax against the Clintonian cuts of DJ A-Ron, Rawkitt and G-MO.

As one of Detroit Bar's most celebrated installments of turntable wizardry, the DJ Battle Royale is always full of surprises. The last DJ Battle at Detroit (featuring a guest appearance by the legendary Biz Markie) seems pretty hard to top, but they'll undoubedtly make a solid effort. The free giveaways and dirt cheap drinks should be enough reason to check it out. And c'mon, where else are you gonna be able to freak dance to Devo and Bell Biv Devoe in the same night?
