It's not enough that our boys from Far East Movement have been rockin' the No. 1 spot on Billboard and iTunes for weeks now; they're also getting remixed by big names such as 50 Cent and Three 6 Mafia.

Record Review: Eugene and the 1914, 'Troubles EP'

Eugene LP.jpg
W
oven delicately and deft in purpose, Eugene and the 1914's Troubles EP  proves that serene, no-frills songwriting will always satisfy the soul, especially in the face of a storm. And Troubles definitely qualifies as inspired rainy day music.

The EP is officially released next month, but the band currently sells them at gigs for $10. The disc opens with the dancing, ambient washes and chunky guitar riffs of "River." The song struts with the understated confidence of Eugene Owens (younger brother of Mars Volta keyboardist Ikey Owens), the band's leader.

Release the Sounds: Vampire Weekend, 'Contra'

Vampire-Weekend-Contra.png
There are a few basic reasons why fans will gravitate toward Vampire Weekend's slightly evolved sophomore release, Contra (out today in the U.S. on XL Recordings). Besides retaining their white-knuckle grip on Afro-pop imitations and sugar-coated existentialism, they're still as bouncy and fun as ever.

Often criticisized by those who view their prep school sweetness and GRE vocabularies with disdain, Contra happily (and smartly) takes their established sound up a notch. The songs are tied in knots of intricate construction, though the big picture of what they create is a lot more powerful than the tracks found on Vampire Weekend's self-titled debut.

Release the Sounds: Cory Joseph, 'Throwing Stones'

Cory Joseph.jpg
Those who favor the magnetizing honesty of singer-songwriters will find it easy to peg the sound Cory Joseph is going for on his sophomore release, the EP Throwing Stones. That doesn't necessarily mean that the Long Beach-based musician is readily imitating popular predecessors like Tyrone Wells or Rocco Deluca---even though his engineer, Chris Karn, has worked with both of them.

Toeing the line between guitar-driven pop and bluesy grit, Joseph (formerly of the band Sleeping Me) explores various corners of his musical past to uncover a new, sentimental and eclectic sound.

Release the Sounds: Pipsqueak, 'Untitled'

Pipsqueak.jpg
Pipsqueak sounds nothing like what their name suggest. Loud, fast and to-the-point, this wiry young multi-instrumentalist garage rock duo from Anaheim (known simply as "Brent and Z.Z.") combine lovelorn lyrics, trashy bravado and lo-fi chaos that manages to disrupt your ear drums--memorably. This Thursday, the band is releasing their untitled label debut on old-school cassette (pictured to your right) via Anaheim's Burger Records (you may remember the label appearing on the cover of the Weekly back in October).

Exploding out of the gate with the frantic opener "Horse Untamed," jittery rhythms become the backdrop for frantic lyrics and a flurry of scratchy caterwauls that seem to be a trademark of each song. Even though their sound is quite at home in the Burger Records family, it's safe to say that this music isn't for everyone. You can pretty much bet after the first couple songs, those listening to them will either press eject and throw the tape out the window, or become fans for life.

Release the Sounds: Ralph Hinkley Syndrome, Self-Titled EP

Ralph Hinkley Syndrome.jpg
Wyman Gentry and Jason Ogle have no problem getting all emotive--and even a bit pious. Rocking together in an Orange County-based guitar duo called Ralph Hinkley Syndrome, their sound encompasses all the virtues of coffee-house rock, right down to the strategically uplifting harmonies and introspective lyrics of love and loss spiced with slivers of Seattle grunge. And then there's the spirituality.

Ralph Hinkley Syndrome's self-titled full-length--released via iTunes in January but streaming now on their MySpace page--opens with a static wave of pops and hisses that actually sound like someone firing up a cappuccino machine. Then the album  eases into first track "Waiting," a sleepy deluge of plucky guitar and delicate vocals that spill into a thick chorus of layered harmonies, slightly dated but full of gusto. Drum and bass jam along with Gentry and Ogle's acoustic chords and occasional stabs of electric guitar noodling.

Release the Sounds: Animal Collective, 'Fall Be Kind'

AC-Fall Be Kind.jpg
In the throes of a digital world, it may seem pointless to review material for an album that was released to in MP3 format almost a month ago. Despite that, we think it's worth noting that the brilliance of Animal Collective's new Fall Be Kind EP (physically released today in the U.S.) is the kind of piece that is best absorbed through the majesty of 12-inch vinyl as the walls of your room echo with sound and smoke trails from you last spliff of homegrown race to the top of the ceiling. But no matter the format, it's abundantly clear that Fall's five-song splendor ironically exhibits AC at the hight of their swirling pop appeal.

Starting with the moody creep and cascading synths of "Graze," the slow burn of anticipation takes hold, generating images of autumn seasons, continuing a trend in AC's music that seems inextricable ties with the seasons (i.e. Merriweather Post Pavilion = winter, Strawberry Jam= summer). The last two minutes of the song stops on a dime and dives into a sunny sliver of flutes and folky textures that seem impossible to sit still too.
