So Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal were on American Idol last night mentoring the final eight.

Rolling Stone
had this to say of their appearance, "Jimmy Iovine brought No Doubt's Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal to help mentor the contestants. I have no quibble with Gwen or Tony, but if I must, they were Nineties, right? But who cares! Gwen and Tony should be on this show forever."
The Hollywood Reporter
weighed in on the couple's dynamic: " Jimmy Iovine recruited No Doubt's Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal, who barely uttered a word while Stefani did all the talking."
But it was the Christian Science Monitor that went in-depth on the Anaheim band's appearance on network TV. (Read it after the jump)

If the MTV VMAs appearance, a Morrissey endorsement and a string of sold-out shows across the country weren't enough to prove that Irvine boys Young the Giant have made it, a spot on Fox's hit show Glee should do the trick.

"Cough Syrup" will be featured in the opening scene of Glee's winter finale. Episode 314 entitled "On My Way" will be on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 8 p.m. on FOX. Apparently, it's the soundtrack to the choir the New Directions going head to head with the Dalton Academy Warblers at Regionals.

Dave Grohl is reportedly executive producing a sitcom about a rock band in crisis. According to NME, the Foo Fighters founder is working with comedian Dana Gould on the project for FX.

Gould will write and star in the project, which will "focus on a band on the verge of megastardom who fall out, and in a last ditch attempt to stay together, seek professional therapy. Unfortunately they end up with a misanthropic couples counsellor who is on the brink of divorce."

How funny would a Dave Grohl-produced sitcom be? We've put together the funniest Grohl bits on the Interwebz--you be the judge.More »

[UPDATED With a Comment From the Real Echo Echo] Echo Echo May Have Some Competition From James Mercer's Fictional Band

Portlandia/IFC
Steve Carson, Echo Echo's frontman, said the band was well aware of the show using their  name. In a phone interview he said, "The producers of the show contacted us to asked permission to use our band name last year and permission was granted.  I'm not sure if they are planning on featuring the "supergroup" Echo Echo again but if they do that's fine by us.  It's bringing extra traffic to our sites and possible sales to iTunes... We've actually had quite a few comments from Portlandia fans stoked to find out that there is an actual band called Echo Echo."

The real Echo Echo formed in 2003 under the name Steve Carson Band, because Carson was the primary singer/songwriter. As they evolved, the band decided to change their name by drawing words out of a hat. When two band members drew the word "Echo" at the same time, it was a done deal.
The band is currently promoting its latest EP, Dripping From The Undercoat, and will be performing at DPS Event Production's Backstage event with Alex Mercier on Feb. 9.

So what if Mercer, Meloy and Tucker do start a band using their name? "That would be very strange," Carson allows.

Original post, Jan. 30, 2012, 10:44 a.m.: Should the Santa Ana indie rockers be worried? Spinner reports that another band called Echo Echo--made up of James Mercer of the Shins, Colin Meloy of the Decemberists and Corin Tucker formerly of Sleater-Kinney--appeared on the IFC show Portlandia in a comedy skit called "Deuce Hotel."

One night last week on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Jimmy Kimmel brought up the idea of National Unfriend Day.
