Phoenix Radio Station's New Logo Oddly Similar to Indie 103.1

In a story first reported by Martin Cizmar over on Up on the Sun (the music/culture blog for our sister paper Phoenix New Times) long-running Phoenix-area alternative rock radio station (and a former employer of mine) The Edge 103.9 has debuted a new logo; one that looks eerily familiar.

Here's the new Edge logo:

Ringing some bells? Yes, no, maybe so?

Yeah.

If it wasn't for the fact that the colors, composition and design (and lightning bolts, of whatever those are) were virtually identical, the fact that "one-o-three" is spelled out in the exact same manner as the now online-only Indie 103.1's logo makes it so laughably obvious that it almost seems like they knew they couldn't get away with it. Like a cheating spouse that secretly wants to be caught. They did add a hand clutching one of the lighting bolts, so that's something.

This would be a little easier to swallow if it meant the Phoenix station, which is currently undergoing a "format modification," would become closer to the classic Indie 103.1 we all know, love and miss, but a quick look at the Edge's recently remodeled website reveals that's far from the case: the five acts they've chosen to represent themselves are Bob Marley, Foo Fighters, Dave Matthews, U2 and the Police. Edgy!

And here's the twist: Up on the Sun reports that the Indie 103.1 logo was designed by Shepard Fairey, the noted contemporary artist behind the Obama "HOPE" poster (and a DJ who has performed at Coachella and the Crosby in Santa Ana), "Andre the Giant has a posse" and the "OBEY" giant. And he's no stranger to litigation, just look at his recent legal wranglings with the Associated Press over the Obama image. Should be interesting to see how this plays out.

Maybe this is meant to evoke nostalgic feelings from the many white people leaving CA for AZ. 103.1 did get taken over by a Spanish station.

Chris says:

Indie 103.1 wasn't "taken over" per se, it was actually owned by a Spanish broadcasting company the whole time, Entravision Communication.
