Cults at Lamb & Flag, Brea Mall, March 25, 2012

New York hipster band Cults has been super busy these past several months. I first checked them out when they played FYF last September. Last week they toured through Los Angeles playing shows at the Glasshouse and the Music Box at the Fonda. And though they're booked larger-size venues such as the Observatory in April, they're still not too cool to stop by sleepy Brea town's mall to do an intimate in-store performance at Lamb & Flag for a small group of fans. The last time I wrote about the band, I was railing against their decision to use the 1978 Jonestown mass suicide as a springboard for increasing their indie credibility. For those not in the know, the band used video wizardry to "Forrest Gump" themselves into archival footage of the People's Temple accompanied by music from their song "Go Outside."More >>

You know you're in trouble when one of your best friends sits next to you and asks your date, "So, you don't mind him flirting with Susan Egan?" But that's exactly what happened to me last night at the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra's POPS! concert, an event I previewed a few days ago by interviewing singer Broadway singer/Orange County native Susan Egan.

Old-school punk rock as a genre has a tendency to sound the same song after song--especially to those unfamiliar with the genre. Luckily for T.S.O.L., they rely on a unique combination of sonic wizardry (think keyboards and chorus-y guitars), as well as the benefit of a front man with a larger-than-life stage presence.

In case you didn't read Weekly Web Editor Vickie Chang's recent cover story on T.S.O.L., front man Jack Grisham has written an autobiography titled An American Demon. Sunday's show was a release party for the book, and in a style befitting any anti-establishment punk rocker,  it was all ages and free.

Friday: Pop Noir Conquers a Crowd at UCSD

No, we didn't bring a real camera.
Being a snazzily dressed member of a well-liked, dance-rockin' local band: Seems cool, right? But you've got to put up with some bullshit if you want to make it big. Like taking gigs at college campuses an hour south of where anyone knows your names--and then trying to win over stony-faced co-eds who haven't even bothered to pre-game you performance.

Over the Weekend: Vivian Girls at University of California, Irvine

The Hype: After bypassing Orange County the last time they toured through Southern California, New York noise pop sensation Vivian Girls came to UC Irvine to play an all-ages acoustic gig Friday afternoon before their show at Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa later in the evening. Having enjoyed considerable attention from critics since their self-titled 2008 debut album--and playing Coachella last year--Vivian Girls were one of the bigger acts to perform at the campus of late.

The Show: A few minutes before 4 p.m., the all-female trio of Vivian Girls sat down for an intimate show inside the UC Irvine Cross Cultural Center. Guitarist and lead singer Cassie Ramone had turned down the volume on her Danelectro, opting for a cleaner, softer sound than what usually drenches the band's albums. Drummer Ali Koehler's kit had been reduced to a floor tom, snare and tambourine. Bassist Kickball Katy seemed to make the smallest adjustment for the acoustic show, keeping her Paul McCartney-esque Hofner violin bass near its usual level.

Over The Weekend: the Soft Pack at Fingerprints, Long Beach

The Hype: Ten shows in one day? Yes, San Diego indie rockers the Soft Pack were crazy enough to jump in a bus and travel across Southern California playing free shows to promote their self-titled debut album on NYC-based Kemado Records. Their fourth stop of the 10 included a visit to Fingerprints record shop Saturday to bash out a quick performance augmented by a stripped-down set by recent Sub Pop signees and Long Beach locals, Avi Buffalo.

The Show: After appearing in Venice Beach at 1:30 p.m., the Soft Pack were scheduled to play Fingerprints at 3:30 p.m. One can only imagine the logistics of setting up and playing 10 shows in a day, let alone actually playing on time. Although they were a tad late, the Soft Pack were worth the wait, playing with reckless abandon by turning up their amps for a blazing version of "C'mon." Brian Hill was channelling Slim Jim Phantom from the Stray Cats with his stand up drumming and minimalist kit.

Over the Weekend: the Riverboat Gamblers, Mike Watt and the Secondmen, Throw Rag at Alex's Bar, Long Beach

The Hype: The bar that has served as the setting for scenes from the HOBO series True Blood and Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, not to mention a slew of top-shelf local and touring music acts, has triumphantly put one decade to bed. Saturday's show was another proverbial notch on the belt featuring Austin-based punks the Riverboat Gamblers, as well as punk hero Mike Watt (Minutemen, Firehose, Stooges, just to name a few). With at least one legendary performer slated to play, expectations were high for this one.

The Show: Never let it be said that Alex's Bar can't throw a corking soiree. For most of the performances, the  place was packed. We're talking panic attack, claustrophobia-inducing, please don't let a fire break out packed. Headliners the Riverboat Gamblers brought the house down with a high octane set of furious punk anthems. Though this band treads well-mapped territory, they prove that with enough energy and a heartfelt delivery, little else matters. Drenched in sweat and racing from one corner of the stage to the other, singer Mike Wiebe called out the hooks, which were responded to by three other band members.

Over the Weekend: Return of the Dream Team at the House of Blues, Anaheim

The Hype: Despite Orange County's out-dated reputation as a no-fly zone for hip-hop, this local showcase of MCs and DJs at the House of Blues, Anaheim grabbed some serious attention thanks to the eclectic, four-piece tribe Return of the Dream Team. The supergroup of sorts is Huntington Beach duo LD and Ariano paired with LA rapper/vocalist Medusa and DJ Flict. Saturday night was their highly anticipated concert debut in front of a hometown crowd. Besides pushing their new single "Cali Quake" (featuring R&B songstress Karolina), Dream Team also brought along a stacked deck of respected groups in the OC hip-hop scene including I&I, Enfamus, rapper/lothario Apoetnomadali as well as LA rap duo Soul Elevation.

The Show: Crisscrossing the stage with charismatic swagger, rappers Ariano and Medusa rustled up an excited flock of local hip-hop fans who came to witness Dream Team's gritty rhymes delivered at club-banging tempo. Bolstered by the beats of the group's seasoned DJ tag team, FLD (LD and DJ Flict), Dream Team fired off an ebullient set marked by Medusa's operatic vocals and Ariano's loose, baritone flows. Apart from their rhyme skills, the Dream Team did an ace job entertaining the crowd. Sporting a pair of light bulbs that operated as homemade earings, Medusa's loud, tremulous vocal hooks and gritty rhyme delivery were the yin to Ariano's witty, laid back yang as they traded vocals on an entire setlist of unheard songs that included the explosive club track "Detonate."

Over the Weekend: An Abyss Called Home on Friday at Chain Reaction, Anaheim

The Hype: Local screamo act An Abyss Called Home's debut performance could have boosted--or crushed--their confidence. Friday night's roster at Chain Reaction featured four other relatively unknown acts who brought their own crowds. An Abyss Called Home had a chance to win over fresh fans, be ignored, booed or worse.

The Show: An Abyss Called Home were the second act up. The room appeared nearly full. The four musicians walked onto the stage self-assured. Lead screamer Brennan Cota's head banging seemed to surprise some of the crowd after the first act's mellow reggae. But as the audience warmed to Cota's tortured yelps and histrionics, in sync with the punishing electric wailing of Ryan Cecil and Wes Nelson, a mosh pit formed during the third song.

Over the Weekend: Cat Party on Saturday at Gypsy Lounge, Lake Forest

The Hype: With The Sockets, Des Roar, and Cat Party all making an appearance Saturday at the Gypsy Lounge in Lake Forest, how could you not been giddy?? Not to rub it in, but the place was seriously packed! I'm talking sardines people!

Cat Party
The Show: Costa Mesa trio Cat Party might look like "we don't care" guys but listening to the lyrics of songs like "Heartache Over Headache" and "Oblong Blue," well, the shit gets deep. Playing with serious speed on the drums, bass and guitar yet still keeping the vocals delightfully melodic, it seems everything just flowed with them. Singing with passion and playing with conviction (although admitting to a few drinks) I've come to the conclusion that these guys rock drunk or sober. Matter of fact, if that is how you rock drunk, pass me the Seagram's!
