George Benson, 'Smart Ass' and More from NAMM Day 4

Categories: namm 2010
As expected, the final day of NAMM felt sleepy compared with Saturday's star-powered spectacle. There were perks, though. Like being able to walk from exhibit to exhibit without being overcome with the same kind of anxiety associated with trying to switch lanes during rush hour on I-5.

George Benson is pointing at you!
Not sure how many "names" were in attendance but jazz guitar great George Benson, who scored a huge pop smash in 1976 with "This Masquerade," elated fans by graciously chatting with each person who waited in line to meet him. The next biggest attraction was probably this kinda-sorta hottie with her heiny hanging out...

Slash, Dave Mustaine, Bootsy Collins, Mick Mars and More at NAMM Day 3

Categories: namm 2010

NAMM showcases myriad musical instruments and gear but the guitar, as it rightfully should, reigns supreme. So, on Saturday at the overloaded Anaheim Convention Center, no appearance caused a greater commotion than Slash's--because, let's face it, he's one of the last true guitar gods. He's a top hat wearing, cig smoking, bourbon swilling icon. Slash's Guns N' Roses contributions compare with anything in the upper echelon of hard rock awesomeness and his work with Velvet Revolver, well, it's not so bad.

Slash
Slash appeared at the Marshall exhibit around 12:30 p.m. to meet, greet, autograph and promote the AFD100, a recreation of what the promo material says was a "hot-rodded, 100 Watt, pre-master volume model from the early 1970s, this legendary amp was hired specifically for the [Appetite for Destruction] sessions in 1986 ... Now Slash and Marshall Amplification have joined forces to recreate that revered 'Appetite Tone' with the announcement of the new Marshall AFD amplifier. Click for more information. Oh yeah, this is also where we learned the exact date of the former Gunner's debut solo album Slash & Friends.

Release Date for Slash's Debut Solo Album Revealed at NAMM Day 3

When they trotted Slash out at the Marshall Amplification exhibit around 12:30 p.m. today at the NAMM trade show, which is being held at the Anaheim Convention Center and wraps Sunday, throngs of fans elbowed their way toward the star, snapped pictures and observed that his trademark top hat seemed a bit shorter than expected.

The line to meet and have something signed by the guitar hero looked like what you might to expect at nearby Disneyland for Pirates of the Caribbean. So, yeah, plenty of noise accompanied Slash's arrival. But one sentence uttered by the announcer shot through the din like a searing solo--at least to my ears. The man born Saul Hudson's highly anticipated debut solo album Slash & Friends--reportedly featuring "four of the five original members of Guns N' Roses: Slash, Izzy Stradlin, Steven Adler and Duff McKagan--will be out April 6, confirming rumors.

Motorhead's Lemmy Kilmister and More at NAMM Day 2

Categories: namm 2010
The musician sightings at NAMM, which runs through Sunday, heated up Friday as I passed Tom Dumont (No Doubt), Kenny G, Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath), Neal Schon (Journey), Billy Zoom (X), Tim Mahoney (311), Rikki Rockett (Poison), Peter Frampton, and Hollywood-based hard rock hero, Lemmy Kilmister (Motorhead), just to name a few.

My first stop of the day was to the massive Roland synthesizer and Boss guitar pedal display. Subscribing to the theory that one can never have enough guitar pedals, I am generally suspicious of multiple guitar effects units. These principles were questioned slightly after I tinkered with the new Boss ME-25 Guitar Effects pedal. It was very versatile and would make a great substitute if you were looking to get rid of the clutter of a bunch of guitar pedals. It even had Super Stack function that could give you that metal crunch to impress your metalhead friends.

DJs, Guitars and Dave Mustaine of Megadeth at NAMM Day 1

Categories: namm 2010
If you have ever felt overwhelmed by stepping into a music store like Sam Ash or Guitar Center, then NAMM, the massive music trade show that kicked off Thursday at the Anaheim Convention Convention Center and runs through Sunday, is not for you.

Your senses are bombarded by the errant guitar squeals and furious drum beats as hundreds of vendor booths are showcasing the latest musical gear. As one could imagine, I was surrounded by ponytails, long hair, sunglasses, tattoos and very long lines for the men's bathroom.

It only took a few steps to watch DJ Z-Trip bust out a sick impromptu DJ set at the Rane booth to running into Dave Mustaine of Megadeth along with his security detail. Most of the day comprised of surveying the different booths and trying not to drool over the new gear.

nuge.jpg
THIS GUY!
We're heading out to the weekend-long NAMM Show extravaganza starting today. We'll keep an eye out for the latest gear, software, nerdy musician types, announcements that only the nerdy musician types would enjoy/care about at all--and, most importantly, the burnt out mega rockstars and even the sorta rockstars.

On our grocery list for tomorrow: Ace Frehley, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Ted Nugent, Alan White, Dick Dale, Weird Al Yankovic. HELL. YEAH. (ETA: Just found out Sublime, or what's left of Sublime, will be at the Cole Clark booth from 2 to 3 p.m.)

Be sure to follow us on @OCWeeklyMusic for some live tweetin' action, TwitPics and more. We'll also have slideshows of photos by the always awesome Andrew Youssef up here on Sunday night. NAMMMMMMMMM!

An Anaheim All-Star Influenced Guitar Legend Duane Eddy

My story on Duane Eddy coming to play at the annual Guitar Geek Festival within walking distance of NAMM in Anaheim Saturday mentions some of the legendary rock pickers and strummers the 71-year-old guitar legend has influenced--as well as at least one bass player, the Who's John Entwistle.

Duane Eddy at Copper Mountain.jpg
Guitar legend Duane Eddy will twang up Anaheim Saturday.
"I met him and he said he'd been influenced by me," Eddy told me on the phone from his home in Nashville a couple weeks back. "In fact, he said he thought I was playing bass, that's why he went out and bought himself a bass."

Eddy and producer Lee Hazlewood concocted the guitarist's signature twangy, bass-heavy, reverberating sound in an Arizona studio in the 1950s to represent the noise of revved-up hot rods, with an echo of the Wild West frontier. You might expect a similar sound coming from the guitar of the musician who first influenced Eddy when he was growing up in Corning, New York. That expectation is wrong.

In fact, it's fitting Eddy is coming to Anaheim to play because his biggest influence is strongly associated with the town. No, it's not Mickey Mouse. It's Gene Autry.

Taylor Swift, Yoko Ono, Quincy Jones Help Kick Off NAMM Trade Show in Anaheim

Categories: namm 2010

The 2010 NAMM Show, which is expected to draw nearly 1,500 exhibiting companies, opens today with multitudes of instrument/products retailers, manufacturers and every leathery-faced, longhaired dude who ever sold you a guitar while telling you about how his band had a record deal but something went wrong at the last minuet back in the 1980s.

No word on if Taylor Swift will also speak on her love of white rabbits

Quincy Jones and Yoko Ono are scheduled to discuss the importance of music education for children this morning during the opening Breakfast Session, at a first-ever SupportMusic Coalition webcast and at a press conference held at the John Lennon Education Tour Bus. Other celebrities expected are Taylor Swift, Jason Mraz and Julianne Hough. The trade show, held at the Anaheim Convention Center today through Sunday, is only open to industry members and their invited guests. NAMM reports a total of 85,799 of registrants, including 1,505 exhibitors, attended last year. Stay tuned for more updates--yes, we'll be there--and pics taken from the convention center.

Prepping for the NAMM Show, Jan. 14-17, Anaheim Convention Center

Miles of exhibits featuring the shiniest new gear plus concerts and ample star power have us all giddy about the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) Show taking place January 14 through 17 at the Anaheim Convention Center. As most people reading this already know, it's pretty much the most awesome music product and trade shindig in the world. Last year, more than 80,000 people attended the invitation-only event featuring 1,500-plus exhibitors. OC Weekly will be there gawking, asking dumb questions, and, yes, blogging. From now until then, expect plenty of updates on what's scheduled to go down.
