Live(ish) from Coachella: Killers? Headliners? Sure!

It's late, and I should probably sleep (or something resembling it) at this point (big day tomorrow: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, My Bloody Valentine, Public Enemy, Friendly Fires, the Cure, PB&J, Lykke Li, Okkervil River etc. etc.!) but I thought I'd share the setlist (and some totally astute observations) from Saturday headliners, the Killers.

The Killers have gotten a ton of crap for not being headliner-worthy, and though the crowd for them was definitely thinner than it was for, say, Paul McCartney last night (kind of an unfair comparison, no?) it was still sizable, and people were into it. Really into it. I took a walk around the perimeter of the audience, and legitimately, maybe 90% of people were singing along to "Human" and "Somebody Told Me" (the two opening numbers). I took a similar stroll at the end of the set, and folks were doing the same for closer "When You Were Young."

They're not necessarily a dynamic live band; their on-stage banter and antics are minimal (though Brandon Flowers did show some much-welcomed signs of life today, with a neat, possibly fabricated, story about "Mr. Brightside" coming from his first meeting with guitarist Dave Keuning. Their songs sound live idential to the record, with no improvisation present. But folks seemed just fine with that, even if the Killers might be the least hip Coachella headliners since, uh, Jack Johnson last year.

I haven't listened to the third Killers album, Day & Age, much since I reviewed it back December, but I lauded heavy praise on it then, and am still a huge fan of those songs, many of which were played (and sounded great!) last night. So yeah, moan all you want, hipsters. (I saw a car tonight that had "Killers=FAIL" written on it.) While they might not be able to compete with genre legends like McCartney and the Cure, they proved Saturday night that they're more than credible festival headliners.

But yes, "Are we human? Or are we dancer?" is still funny.

More Saturday talk in the morning. Setlist here!

Setlist:
"Human"
"Somebody Told Me"
"For Reasons Unknown"
"This Is Your Life"
"Joyride"
"Bling (Confession of a King)"
"Shadowplay"
"Smile Like You Mean It"
"Spaceman"
"A Dustland Fairytale"
"Sam's Town"
"Read My Mind"
"Mr. Brightside"
"All These Things That I've Done"

Encore:
"Bones"
"Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine"
"When You Were Young"
