Snoop Dogg - Heat Ultra Lounge - May 29, 2013

Heat Ultra Lounge

Was I supposed to know Snoop Dogg's show last night at Heat Ultra Lounge was a DJ set and not a traditional performance or did I miss the memo? I mean, I sure as hell thought Tha Doggfather would be getting on the mic to kick some rhymes, but instead the S-N-Double O-P played a bunch of hip-hop tracks from a laptop while smoking a shit-ton of weed. Maybe that's what they do at Heat Ultra Lounge and maybe I'm just a skinny, pasty, white 33-year-old with glasses who wears faded Bad Brains shirts to overpriced dance clubs because I have my head jammed up my ass. Maybe.

Maceo Plex: The Deep House Dark Horse of Beyond Wonderland

Maceo Plex.jpg

After falling in love with electro in his native Miami, Eric Estornel began deejaying in the early 90s. Like most EDM enthusiasts he later got into techno and began making house beats in 1996. He moved his family to Dallas where he made a name for himself as a local DJ, but it wasn't until he fled to the European dance music scene that things started to take off for him four years ago. He released an LP on the infamous Crosstown Rebels label and his appeal has since skyrocketed. Tonight, going by his DJ moniker Maceo Plex, the soulful, underground producer is headlining the official Insomniac Beyond Wonderland pre-party alongside Maya Jane Coles at Exchange LA and playing the Crosstown Rebels Rave stage at Beyond Wonderland Saturday only to make his way back to Miami for his Ultra Music Festival debut on Sunday!

Myndset is an Old School DJ With New School Head Gear

There are some local artists who are destined for the lime-light, even if Orange County doesn't always have much to offer in that regard. This is something Myndset learned early on in his career as a hip-hop DJ. At the time he went by a different moniker and played every major club in OC feeding the masses their weekly dose of top 40 and hip hop beats. He felt hip hop was getting stale and was drawn by the sounds of electronic music - something that hadn't reached the popularity it has now and which he says "feed his soul." He enrolled in OC Weekly's DJ competition to play at Ultra Music Festival in 2008 and won, landing himself a coveted spot at one of EDM's biggest festivals in the world.

"That was one of the best days of my life and such a cool experience, Myndset says. "I was like it's there for the taking if anyone wants but I can do this. So I practiced the shit out of my routine and brought out all my tricks as a true turntablist." Yet the biggest thing he gained from that experience is that you can make it as a traveling DJ (something he had always dreamed of) and the world was his oyster with hard work and perseverance.

Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano have carried on the Dutch legacy as house music's elite producers and DJs, with gigs all over the world, after practically being discovered by Swedish House Mafia's Steve Angello in 2011. The duo stormed through Orange County this weekend for a highly anticipated return to Sutra in Newport Beach. Thanks to the guys at the Social, Creative Source and Till Dawn Group, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano managed to transform Sutra's usual Top 40 Friday night spot into an EDM heaven (let's cross our fingers this is a trend we will see more of). We spoke to the fast rising stars who emerged on the EDM scene in 2009 after their Feb. 8 show to find out what it's like to party with the Swedes, why Chuckie is one of their biggest influence, and more about their track being released this week.

Cazzette, Minaya & Vikus - Heat Ultra Lounge - February 7th, 2013

Sebastien Furrer and Alexander Björklund of Cazzette

Heat Ultra Lounge
February 7th, 2013

Last night, the Swedish duo Cazzette brought their signature self proclaimed "dubhouse" sound to Heat Ultra Lounge in Anaheim. Legally known as Sebastien Furrer and Alexander Björklund, Cazzette appeared on the dance music scene out of practically nowhere in the summer of 2011 thanks to the brains of producer Ash Pournouri from At Night Management who is also responsible for discovering Avicii. They are currently on their Eject Tour to promote part three of their debut album available exclusively on Spotify (the first major debut issued exclusively to a streaming music site). This special Thursday night EDM event had the likes of OC Weekly favorites Minaya & Vikus opening up thanks to powerhouse promoters Giant.

OC house music favorites Daniel Minaya and Shane Vikus threw down a sick 75-minute set which incorporated lots of tech house like Trent Cantrelle's "Naturally" to remixes of classic house anthems like Fragma's "Toca Miracle." They did a stellar job at hyping up the crowd with enough unknown dance beats and well known vocals like "Pump up the Jam" to make the crowd want to dance.

Mightyfools - Yost Theater - January 24, 2013

Yost Theater

Last night, we headed to the Yost Theater in Santa Ana (our favorite EDM hot spot as of late) to celebrate the budding promotion company White Rabbit Group's Three Year Anniversary with an Alice & Wonderland themed soirée. "Consistently bringing talent that's never been to Orange County has been the focus of White Rabbit," says it's CEO Brandon Owen. "We like taking risks with artist like Klaas, Global Deejays, Dillon Francis, Crizzly (before he was even signed), Peacetreaty's first headlining slot in OC and like with Mightyfools tonight," he said. White Rabbit is also the group behind booking the first real trap artist in Orange County as well as sticking to their mainly dub and electro artists which his 18-and-over crowd loves.

On Friday night, Tomi Fallenius better known by his stage name Tom Fall, blew our expectations for his show at the Yost Theater in Santa Ana. Making his West Coast debut thanks to Trilogy Events, the 27-year old producer-DJ could easily be the next generation of progressive trance or trouse as some like to call it today. He took The Yost by storm through an effortless 90-minute set of a variety of different EDM sub genres such as trance with uplifting melodies and banging house tracks with his own unique twist.

Fall derived much praise in the EDM community after receiving a coveted spot on Armin Van Buuren's A State of Trance 550 at the Ministry of Sound in London. His take on dance music, personal edits, mash-ups and remixes made Fall's performance memorable and contagious putting him on any EDM enthusiast's radar. Having reworked songs for artist like Van Buuren, Cosmic Gate, W&W and Morgan Page he now has a debut album slated to release on Armada Music. With so much hype around the Finish artist it was no wonder the Yost Theater was packed as can be despite the unbearable cold weather.

On Wednesday night, we headed to Hollywood for the 9th Annual Holiday Groove Toy Drive at Playhouse hosted by Groove Radio, Chemistry LA and We Simply Rule. Swedish Egil, the European DJ who made a name for himself as a radio personality on KROQ, has built an incredible institution with Groove Radio for 20 years now and is often called the "Godfather" of dance music. Some of the biggest names in EDM have joined Egil on not only Groove Radio, but at his massive year end party Holiday Groove which benefits the "Spark of Love" charity for kids.

Over 40 DJs such as Trent Cantrelle, Shogun, DJ Dan, Christopher Lawrence, The Crystal Method, Tommy Lee & DJ Aero and Paul Ahi played at Playhouse on Wednesday while live on Groove Radio for a fabulous evening that celebrated electronic dance music and it's Los Angeles pioneers. Decorated in Christmas cheer complete with a Santa Clause, Playhouse has been a successful staple in EDM with their Monday Night Social, Dirty Sexy House Fridays and events like Holiday Groove year after year.
