No other musical genre (aside from reggae) has a stronger connection to the cannabis lifestyle than heavy metal, hence the term 'stoner metal.' But of course, this term describes a subgenre that can encompass different types of metal music and mean different things to different folks; whether you're into that slow burning, hazy sound or a faster heavier more intense variety, there are as many ' stoner' metal bands as there are strains of marijuana. The following artists are best heard in a more mellow state of mind; but be warned, while some of these bands might look stoned in appearance, they all possess similar sound waves and patterns that heavy are enough to shatter your glass bong. So burn a bowl of your best stash, and turn your speakers up loud for the following. Here's our list of the Top 10 Stoner Metal Bands.

10.Bongripper
This disturbing doom metal group formed in the Chicago area around a decade ago, and is known for a dark, hateful, harsh mix of misery and clouds of pot smoke, presented in a zoned out instrumental fashion with no vocals. This is an ambient and experimental version of metal that many stoners find appealing. The songs are insanely long, and sometimes cloudy and repetitive but head jerking in a way that wakes your mind up like a Sativa but lulls your body into a violent numbness like an Indica. Stoners love the band's sick and twisted sense of humor, with albums such as The Great Barrier Reefer (2005), and Hippie Killer (2007), which featured the fan favorite, 'Reefer Southerland.' Also in 2007, the band released Heroin, which packs the punch of doom metal but moves more towards an ambient direction. The actual presentation, that came with the CD included a tiny 'users' kit, with fake spoon lighter and rubber band.

9.Weedeater
Imagine a band that would be the musical equivalent of overdosing on potent pot edibles. This is Weedeater, formed in the mid '90s, in North Carloina, and now referred to as one of stoner metal's loudest, and most intense bands, both live and on record. The heavy guitar tones that echo the thunderous bass and smashing drums all roll up tightly to form a sludgy Southern Rock tinged doom metal that is thick with walls of sound and layered with fuzzy riffs. Weedeater features vocalist and bassist Dave 'Dixie' Collins formerly of Bongzilla. (See below).

Pantera, Tenacious D or Superjoint Ritual aren't stoner metal bands just because the members smoke weed. Stoner metal is a doom metal sub-genre. You can tell it's stoner metal because of the slow and bass heavy sound.

i can tolerate tenacious d not being on the list, cuz they´re not really metal, but rock (mock-rock). but no System of a down? come on! those guys live and breathe for cannabis! (atleast daron malakian)

Superjoint Ritual?

You guys just embarrassed yourselves! The list is (mostly) ok, but I won't nitpick. The lack of authenticity and use of "lingo" makes you sound like my grandma just looked up stoner metal in wikipedia. Raise the bar guys

So, no Pentagram or Cathedral. That makes no sense at all...

to leave out Kyuss is a massive fuck up. Sabbath being no.1 was way too predictable but they certainly influenced every single band on the list already. I (now this is just me) would have put Sleep as no. 1 Electric Wiz no. 2 and Kyuss no.3...  honestly sabbath would have been off my radar because stoner metal really didn't seem to develop until after their amazing influence.

i agree with the person who said whoever wrote this didn't do their homework. dixie dave from weedeater was never in bongzilla...he was in buzzov-en! he's a helluva cool guy to hang out with, too. i saw him tackle (and take down) a cemented-down park grill one time at a show my old band played with them in alabama. the reason? "that goddamn thing's been makin' eyes at me all day and ain't done SHIT!"

...needless to say, whiskey was involved.

FU MANCHU and its bastard child NEBULA are my favorite stoner bands!

saint vitus ain't stoner..it's doom metal. black sabbath is heavy rock, i mean come'on, stoner didn't even exist back then..with this thinking we can label a handful of phsy/garage/heavy bands of the time like blue cheer, budgie, sir lord baltimore etc. as stoner...stoner rock and metal (it's really a different thing) is a music born in the 90's, don't mean shit if it was influenced and based on older tunes, happens all the time with all kinds of music as far as i know..

Whoever wrote this does NOT do their homework, or at least not about the band Sleep. Wise up: JERUSALEM and DOPESMOKER are just different versions of the SAME ALBUM! Get the longer DOPESMOKER and you don't need JERUSALEM. Dude, go to your room without your vaporizer!

Love most of those bands, but for example, Saint Vitus are more straight up classic doom. Wino's work with Spirit Caravan fits the stoner metal bill much better. See also Elder, Ramesses, Earthless, Goatess and newcomers Monolord, album out just yesterday!

Orange Goblin is not heavy enough to be considered as Metal. And Black Sabbath? Come on people, it's time to move on....

@grevyturty   How do you hide money from a hippie??  Put it under the soap!  The reason everyone takes drugs at Jam band shows is that's the only way anyone can tolerate any of that boring crap your tard ass calls music!!  Now be a nice counter culture fag and fuck off!!!

Cracking list here, I'd also give honourable mentions to Kyuss, Boris, Melvins, Cathedral and Acid Mother's Temple. Gotta include Blue Cheer too.

"No other musical genre (aside from reggae) has a stronger connection to the cannabis lifestyle than heavy metal"

Wow, there are people who actually believe that? On what planet? Jam bands like Phish are second to Reggae, and this 'tard rock is a distant 3rd. Disgraceful tattooed goofs.

Blue Cheer was the first metal band.

Wow... If Kyuss isn't even on the list, then the list is broken and sad.

@huseyinhakanakgun If for nothing else, Goblin should get the mention for "Frequencies From Planet Ten..." Their very first album, filled with psychedelic riffery and copious amounts of doom metal grooviness... They also had another great album in "Time Travelling Blues," then somewhere around "The Big Black" the change came...

Speaking of other killer doom bands, Sons Of Otis should MOST DEFINITELY be mentioned... Angry, spacey, stoner/doom, and nobody else on the planet sounds like them!!! Get "Spacejumbofudge" to hear the Orange Amplification and deep, heavy rumbling bass like a planet's blowing up... Then check out Argentina's Natas courtesy of their "Ciudad De Brahman" album... Dozer is fuckin' great. If you dig St. Vitus, check out Wino's other killer project Spirit Caravan. Abdullah is mind blowing, complete with eastern philosophy lyrics (get their self titled debut on Meteor City). Sasquatch is cool and fuzzed out, same goes for more recent band We Hunt Buffalo. Hop on over to France's Water Dragon Records and check out the Norwegians in the band Honcho ("Corporate Rock") and their Scandinavian brethren Sparzanza ("Into The Sewers.")  Yeah, we love us some Stoner rock!!
