HB City Council Suing to Stop Wet Electric Beach Party. Too Little Too Late?

Categories: epic fails

With barely a week until Saturday's Wet Electric party descends on Huntington Beach, city officials are busy making headlines for their 11th hour attempt to stop the party with a lawsuit against the promoters and groups associated with the event. Considering the destructive douchebaggery of the July riots that tore through Main Street after the U.S. Open of Surfing, in some ways its hard to blame them. After all, the potential of two black eyes in a row involving spoiled HB brats and loud music isn't exactly a good look for the city.

However, with such a small amount of time before the event and a decent argument from PMG over the council's power to affect what goes on state property (i.e. the beach), the chances of Wet Electric going off without a hitch are pretty good.

And so, we light a nearby Virgin de Guadalupe candle and pray we don't wake up to another edition of Rackygate...

On Sep.14, scores of ticket holders are expected to show up to Huntington Beach State Park to see EDM giants Paul Oakenfold, Erick Morillo and more DJing what seems to be an adult-sized kiddie pool party on steroids. The event, slated to go from 12 p.m.-9 p.m., is boasting almost two dozen well-known deejays, cabanas, giant water slides, ziplines day beds and bars. Last week, the City Council authorized the city attorney to file the suit.

"It doesn't surprise me," PMG President Steve Thacher told the L.A. Times regarding the lawsuit, noting the city's filing was news to him as of late last week. "They've been pretty irrational up until this point, so I wouldn't expect anything else to change."

In addition to Premiere Media Group, Wet Electric is also promoted by the state of California (?!) and the nonprofit Giving It Back To Kids--which is receiving proceeds from the event. Wet Electric also has a date scheduled in Tempe, Ariz. on October 5. Last year's installment in Irvine was held in the confines of Wild Rivers water park in Irvine where reports of crime were minimal. Although we doubt there were many stop signs to beat up or shop windows to break.

In August, City Atty. Jennifer McGrath sent Thacher a letter requesting that the promoter cancel the event because the company's permit did not abide by the city's zoning and subdivision ordinance regarding temporary use and land use control. However, it turns out that was kind of a bungle, according to state officials.

Nope, the US Open trouble was for the most part caused by beaners. Look at the photos and the last names of the shit heads arrested.

Did you read the ages of the guys arrested from the US Open? One was a fire fighter, in his 30's. Only one arrest was someone under 18.

It's 10,000 people, drinking for 9 hours in the sun. It's more than a "music fest".

The city of HB where I live relax this is a 21 and over event and NOT a RAVE. A RAVE is all ages 18 and over. The event is south of Brookhurst nowhere near Main St so relax. HB you should be blaming the parents of the 18 year olds that caused those riots. Don't assume a different event will do the same. This event has been held for 2 years in the city of Irvine with much stricter rules with no incidents. RELAX and let adults be adults has this event is for the music the same as if Doheny Days was to be here just a different gandra of music. Would you try and stop Rhythm and Blues if it was played in HB ? Probably not

I hope this thing gets shut down the day before it happens! I already know its gonna be filled with douchebags that recently claim to live in Huntington Beach. All these scumbags with no lives that live at the gym to get fake muscles just for looks keep moving to this great city of HB and trashing it making it look like Jersey Shore, its fuckin sad, now theyre gonna have this event where the scum of these people will flock to in herds!

Dont care where it is there is going to be a chance of a problem some dickheaded drunks getting stupid. But thats what security is for if everything is done right there can be a event with no issues. I live in hb see no issue with it if there are no problems. And all these snobs that want to take any fun events away from our city can go suck a dick.

lol no definitely not, but why does having a music event in HB mean there will be another riot? right. so, one riot, and no more events in this city? how does that approach have any actual longevity?

just stay home if youre that worried about it. nobody is mentioning all the money that will be spent in HB undoubtedly by the many festival goers. For chirst sake, just let us have a great festival!

Come on guys. This one is simple. This is a 21 and up event. Most of those punks at the us open screwing around were drunk 17 year olds. Those raves get out of control too cuz they are all ages usually. This will be fine. Too many rules in California. Pretty cool they are letting this happen

Something only an immature turd would say. So are you saying that you support the type of crap that went on with the US Open?

My son attended the Wet Electric last year in Irvine and it was all about the music, He had a blast. He is a DJ and Producer of this genre. In an ideal world the beach and electronic music seems a perfect fit. And the great majority of folks attending are peaceful and fun, but add in the Bros and Ho's , from all over & including HB, who aren't coming for the music and just want to get stupid and thats where it gets ugly. My son isnt going to HB and is opting for a better Electronic fest in San Diego, ticketed enclosed and better sound system . We lived and grew up in HB, still own a home there, but frankly glad we moved last year to so cal Wine country, Its turning into a real trashy destination with too many junkies and meth heads thinking they can invade and ruin main street and rip off folks along Beach Blvd. etc., I hope the promoters have some way of keeping the unticketed out! Give them a chance to prove themselves , but if there are further issues, its time to move the BIG events out of HB.

i think its funny that 10 years ago when i was a kid i would pay 50-100$ to go see some of those artists and now...they have to do 20$ shows in my home town. lol says just as much about them as the people going to see them. and kent, i like what you say but HB is always going to be known for loser drug additcs and wanna be gangsters. we really need to just embrace their stupidity and let them slowly kill themselves off. i vote no more warning labels on products!

" Leave them away from our poor defenseless news racks" might be the funniest thing I have read in a long time! Haha!! Just goes to show exactly why HB city does not want another shitshow arriving to our town that they NO control over.

I am in no way a HB fan but isn't it pretty much understood that nearly all the rioters from the recent US Open were out of towners? Why the "the potential of two black eyes in a row involving spoiled HB brats" comment? Is that as close as you could rationally come to blaming it on white, racist, OC people?

I was at The HB Pier for the first riot in the 80's. The melay this year was caused by the same problem; not enough police in the right places. If you want to have the title Surf City, get your act together HB! And what kinda knucklehead thinks there is something wrong with fireworks in HB?

oh, HB having a bunch of old people whining about fun? YEP THATS HB

the mayor that allowed fireworks back in is not the current mayor. The Mayor that is in term now is suing the State for allowing this Rave to go on.

Lenny Taylor bring back the 80's in HB!? Are you high? That's when the real riot happened, and bring back all the heroin, smoking, and drinking on the beach? That would solve a ton of problems. Keep living in the past Lenny because that's where it stays. It's not the majors fault. It's your fault for not keeping a better HB for the younger generation. You dopes in the 80's didn't pay attention to anything amd sold out all your.land to developing. Get real dude look in the mirror for HB's current status....What a local boob

Lenny Taylor
Lenny Taylor

Yes! First the scum bag allowed fireworks back into are city. Which cost the city & tax payers more money. The fire dept had many 911 calls.. The council did nothing to prevent the riot on main street. You have to be proactive to prevent crime and danger to our citizens.. The locals helped more than the officials to stop the riot.. The pride of the citizens

Lenny Taylor
Lenny Taylor

We need a new Mayor for HB.. It's time to bring back what HB had in the 80s..

@SickSnail Understood that most locals were mere bystanders when it all went down...right. Because THAT's how riots work. Is "out of towners" as close as you could come to saying "derelicts and brown people from the 909?"

Highway39

Exactly! How many times does HB have to learn the same lesson?! Maybe if the dips#%€ city council could stop planning failed construction projects long enough to run the actual city, they could keep a beatch safe around here!

@Nate @SickSnail I believe this is the information you were bickering about:  http://articles.latimes.com/2013/jul/29/local/la-me-ln-police-identify-those-arrested-in-huntington-beach-riots-20130729

The following people were arrested and booked at the city jail:

* Michael John Lytle, 30, of Anaheim, arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

* Andres Gomez, 24, of Huntington Beach, arrested on suspicion of refusing to disperse and resisting arrest.

* Michael Anthony Avila, 28, of Santa Ana, arrested on suspicion of resisting or delaying a police officer.

* Joseph Monterrosa, 28, of Ontario, arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

* Adam A. Cecot, 18, of Irvine, arrested on suspicion of refusing to disperse/unlawful assembly.

* Chase Scott Christman, 19, of Simi Valley, arrested on suspicion of vandalism over $400, urging destruction of property and refusing to disperse/unlawful assembly;

* Kyle Roger Crott, 18, of Riverside, charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and resisting arrest.

@clemens1 @Nate @SickSnail Meh, not really. Yeah, I'd love to see a 10-man riot. That would be interesting. Alas, as you can tell from the video above, that wasn't quite the case. I'm willing to bet few more, probably locals, deserved similar charges. Luckily the likelihood of a repeat amongst ticket-holders to party like this--be they from HB or wherever-- is small compared to a bunch of idiots who just came to hang out and put beat downs on inanimate objects for no reason.
