A Straight Edge Dude Tells Us His Top 10 Favorite Straight Edge Bands

Chris Hansen -- Founder of No Sleep Records

No matter how you view straight edge or straight edge bands, it's an undeniable part of punk culture. The idea of opting out of a life with alcohol, drugs, and promiscuous sex has raised a lot of questions, and draws a long-standing line in the sand for many in the punk community. The straight edge movement effectively took over hardcore punk starting in the 1980's with Ian MacKaye and Minor Threat. The term straight edge has been redefined countless times by many different hardcore scenes. Today, many of the founders of the straight edge movement are disillusioned by the term, having seen straight edge music and the philosophy of the scene stretched to it's limits. However, straight edge culture still means something to a lot of people. Even with fewer and fewer bands repping the lifestyle--"Don't drink, don't smoke, don't fuck!"--many people are still claiming edge and practicing a life without those vices.

One Huntington Beach record label, No Sleep Records, often hands out informational pamphlets in mail orders and the owner Chris Hansen is a straight edge vegan. Although the label isn't an exclusively straightedge label, they often sell merch and stickers with the "X" logo.

Chris Hansen: I think straight edge for me is definitely a way of life. It's a good reason why I'm still here. A lot of my friends are glad that I don't drink; I would probably be a violent alcoholic. Growing up seeing some of my family not handle their alcohol well had a huge impact on me. They don't go crazy, but [I realized at a] pretty young [age] I don't want to drink and I that want to have a clear mind. I want to be me. I don't want to have to drink to have fun. I have friends that aren't straight edge, not everyone here at No Sleep is straight edge. People can do whatever they want as long as they're not hurting themselves. I sell straight edge merch, I support the straight edge and vegan as well, but I don't preach it to anyone.

Here is Chris's list of his favorite straight edge bands:

10. xFilesx
I always list this as one of my favorite straight edge bands because I love the "X-Files" TV show and the band just makes me think of "X-Files." I don't know what label they are on or much about them, but when I was working at Revelation Records, we had their discography and I would listen to it non-stop. They are just a really good straight edge band.

9.RAMBO
I've never seen them, and I don't know a ton about them; I just loved their albums. They were on Havoc Records. "Wall of Death the System" is a great song. RAMBO is a great straight-up hardcore band. Not a lot of people think of them as straight edge, but they were straight edge at the end of the day.

8. Prayer for Cleansing
Prayer for Cleansing is an awesome band. They're on Tribunal Records. Their sound is more metal or metalcore, similar to Undying. They're a straightedge-vegan band, They're very, very heavy. I never got a chance to see them either.

the truth album by the band HALFOFF is one of the best and most over looked straight edge records of all time! and the teen idles may not be the greatest but that's pretty much the band that started it all.

If you had a job at Revelation Records, you probably know a bit about hardcore. I can't see them hiring someone who just likes Have Heart.

No Sleep puts out a lot of great records. Hardcore bands come and go so quickly that it is easy to not have seen one of your favorite bands. Also, easy to hear about a band after they broke up. I love Earth Crisis too but maybe he doesn't like 90's hardcore that much.

Wow weak list. He worked for a record Label? /? Never seen them band live??? He is lost. No wonder music is going to shit.

It's his opinion, who cares what he includes or forgets. You must really lead a sheltered life if your biggest problem in the world is a differentiating opinion to your own. Great choice on Champion and Refused!

This article should be called, "A Straight Edge Douchebag Tells Us About Some Shitty Bands Who Think They're Awesome Because They're Teetotalers". And seriously dude, those tattoos? They don't make you look hard; they make you look like you're trying to fend off prison rape because you're really a little bitch on the inside. Grow up.

Where's earth crisis on this list? Destroy the machines!

such a silly list. I think part of the issue is that the title that the editor gave it is "Top 10 Straight Edge Bands Of All Time," when Chris says it's his FAVORITE ten Straight Edge bands, which is a significant difference. I missed this part myself at first read and thought "This is just so insanely ridiculous." I guess it doesn't matter though if it gets the blog more hits, right?

So you've seen any of your top ten favorite bands what once, twice?  Not really straight edge any more...not really my favorite...havent really seen them...  etc.  I call bullshit on this sad list.  Yours truly, a beer swilling punk rocker heavy metal guy.

Champion & Minor threat. Only good bands in this list (my opinion)

This list sucks...the only decent band on here is Minor Threat...

Minor Threat were not a straightedge band! Ian and Jeff were the only straightedge members of the band. They only had ONE song about straightedge, and that was "Straight Edge". ...If having 2 our of 4 members of a band be straightedge, and having ONE SONG out of many about straightedge makes you a straightedge band, then A LOT more bands would be identified as such.

That's where we get a lot of misconceptions about straightedge; from believing that Minor Threat lyrics are a bible for sXe lifestyle. This is why people think we don't have sex, or as much sex as we want, because of "Out Of Step". Straightedge isn't about sex. It's also not about "abstinence" from substances. It's not a rehab program, it's just punk rockers that don't get drunk or do recreational drugs. It takes no serious effort; it's just something that you do, or just how you are. It wasn't supposed to be anything more than that.

Straight Edge guys still bantering over whats purer, who was first, who's more influential, and who is most likely to change the world by not getting laid.  Better than this morning's newpsaper, thats for sure.

As soon as I saw the URL I knew how bad this list was going to be. But holy fuck, I can't even comprehend how this dick bag can be considered a (credible) source of information. Check with your editor next time (who probably knows more about hardcore than you).

Throwdown is an embarrassing footnote. Refused, while a critically praised group (code for "I don't like this band but they curiously have a really dedicated following"), also feels off. Where are Slapshot, Youth of Today, Confront?

10. xFilesx - I always list this as one of my favorite straight edge bands because I love the X-Files TV Show and the band just makes me think of X-Files. I don't know what label they are on or much about them.

9. RAMBO - I've never seen them, and I don't know a ton about them.

8. Prayer for Cleansing - I never got a chance to see them either.

7. Champion - I was going to go to one of their last shows but I wasn't able to make it up. I really regret not going now.

6. Have Heart - Have Heart is straight edge hardcore music for kids who are just being hardcore kids.

5. I Hate You - I've never seen them. Didn't really get into them until they were already done.

4. Good Clean Fun - I saw them one time and it was great.

3. Throwdown - I don't know what they are now if they are still straightedge or whatever, I'm not sure.

2. Refused - In there later years, they weren't really considered a straight edge band. But on the first couple of releases they definitely were. If you go to their older EP's they were a straight edge band. Their old logo had a huge X on it.

1. Minor Threat - Maybe not one of my top favorite straightedge bands.

This is the worst top 10 list I have ever read....Except for Minor Threat, which would probably be the answer to a straightedge question on jeopardy, you give absolutely no props to any band from the 80's or the 90's. You're a total poser who knows nothing about SxE and Hardcore history. Let me guess, you bought your Minor Threat t-shirt at Urban Outfitters.....

What about the Cro-Mags, Gorilla Biscuits, Chain of Strength, Judge, 7 Seconds, Youth of Today, Slapshot, Bold, Ten Yard Fight, Earth Crisis, etc. etc... this list is way too new-school/scenester oriented.

this list is worst than the music you put out. Have you ever heard of YOUTH OF TODAY, UNIFORM CHOICE, INSTED, CHAIN OF STRENGTH, EARTH CRISIS, LARM, GORILLA BISCUITS? The list could go on but I'm sure you wouldn't know any of them.

7 Seconds don't classify themselves as ever being a straight edge band. Well that's what Kevin told me after I tried interviewing him.

In the "just sayin" department, it's ironic that author doesn't know what label his #10 pick was on, though he mentions that he worked at Rev, the label's exclusive distribution outlet. It's also worth noting that the central image in the link he posted is an illustration by said label owner.

You're from OC and you don't include Uniform Choice or No For An Answer?  No Chain, Youth of Today, Judge or even Earth Crisis?  If it weren't for your top choice, which, let's face it, is a given, I'd be throwing eggs at OC Weekly headquarters instead of writing this.
