NorCal vs. SoCal Fests: A Comparison

guesswhere.jpg
Can you tell which photo was taken at a SoCal fest?
Everyone says California should be split into two -- NorCal and SoCal are so different in temperature, vibe and personality that it might as well be different states. Check out just how different in our comparison below.

The Music

While NorCal's Reggae on the River has the usual suspects -- a random Marley (Julian this time), Sierra Leone's Refugee Allstars and Anthony B -- and SoCal's Lightning in the Bottle is a showcase of DoLab greats (plus Purity Ring!) all the other festivals happening around California look ... just about the same. If anything, SoCal has more heavy hitters in the EDM genre (HARD will have Bassnectar, Flying Lotus and Baauer) and NorCal will feature more jam-type bands (moe., Primus and White Denim at the High Sierra Music Festival).

That was kind of my point Brian. The only people I ever hear talk about this stuff are from the Bay Area. I've had Bay Area friends says "well LA people are X", etc. I've never had a conversation growing up down here where someone said 'San Fransisco people are X'. So its a bit surprising to see an article like this in the OC Weekly. I do like to tweak friend's noses by calling SF "Frisco" though. ;)

It wasn't NoCal people writing it. Who's obsessed with who?

The Northern 3rd of our state could easily be called Southern Oregon

I'm all for CA splitting up. It would ultimately help provide far better representation for the various regions than Sacramento does today.

Actually, I have heard of people wanting it split into 4-5 states. Northern Cal, Bay Area, Central California, Southern California, and Desert regions. Note: Bay Area is by itself. As they think of themselves anyway.

@Cris Whetstone  I hear it that same way.  Up in the Bay Area the young people are talking about NoCal this vs SoCal that. It's everyday party talk, hangout talk, and coffeeshop talk. Down here I've never heard it once.

@Kanani Fong  Santana should be it's own country, Newport Beach it's own private gated resort, and Laguna ... nemmind, they all already moved to Oregon and Whidby Island and left the mess behind.
