Save Ferris "Reunion Show" Not Actually a Reunion, We Ask the Band to Find Out Why

Save+Ferris.jpg
On Monday, a presale for OC Fair's Pacific Amphitheater series came up advertising a Save Ferris with The English Beat and The Originalites lineup for July 27. For the kids who remember the 1990s, it was a huge deal. Save Ferris was a big, big band  during ska's heyday, almost (but of course not quite like) No Doubt. No one really knows how they broke up, but when the annoucement went up, Facebook was immediately atwitter (hah! see what I did there?) with comments from the kids from the '90s, messaging each other to a) make sure it was the whole band and 2) buy tickets.

And then...

Tuesday night, the Save Ferris Official Page on Facebook posted this:

ORIGINAL "SAVE FERRIS" BAND MEMBERS DEBUNK ANNOUNCEMENT OF "REUNION SHOW"

Anaheim, CA, April 9, 2013 - To Our Fans: It was brought to our attention that on or about April 8, 2013 Monique Powell, the former singer for the band "Save Ferris," announced that a Save Ferris "reunion show" would be taking place at the Orange County Fairgrounds on July 27, 2013. We feel it is important that fans of the band Save Ferris know that this is NOT a reunion show and the show will NOT include any original or former Band member other than Monique Powell. We have not authorized Monique Powell to perform under the name Save Ferris and the original and former Band members regret any confusion to our fans that may be caused as a result of any misleading statements or marketing materials disseminated by Ms. Powell or any other parties connected to this concert engagement. From what we can infer by the marketing and advertising materials we have seen thus far, this engagement is simply a Monique Powell performance of Save Ferris material accompanied by various musicians, who are unknown to the Band.

Due to the large number of inquiries we have received about this subject matter, we felt it was appropriate to release this statement to better clarify the participants of this event so that the public and our loyal fans can make an informed decision regarding whether to attend the event.

Although we would like to perform an actual "reunion show" at some point in time featuring the original and former Band members, we would like to take this opportunity now to thank all of the Save Ferris fans who have continued to support our music and the Band over the years. Thank you!

Bill Uechi

Eric Zamora

Brian Mashburn

Brian "Tbone Willy" Williams.

Evan Kilbourne

Oliver Zavala

We caught up with Save Ferris' main songwriter and guitarist Brian Mashburn to elaborate on the statement....

This one's for that chubby blonde with the cheap fake boobs and the fake tan that's been stalking Mo for a number of years. Professional karaoke singer, seat filler and oxygen thief. Never written a song in her life: "Chloe Starr", we've caught you!. :) So far our atty's have uncovered three Catfish accounts linked to you. We'll find the rest. Don't worry :) Are you ready??

"Don't be fooled, MONIQUE POWELL co-wrote 75% of the songs, co-produced 100% of the albums, financed the first EP, was the band's first manager and booker, and chose SAVE FERRIS's ONLY "hit" song, which, coincidentally, was a COVER. For their second single Mashburn lied about the involvement of 2 other writers. People's inability to recognize POWELL's immense contribution to SF can only be summed into one thing: old fashioned MISOGYNY."-AUTHOR UNKNOWN

That's not "begging the question."  It is, however, "raising" a question.

Fans should put forth a call to action, for both sides to stop pointing fingers and "put their money where their mouth is" and make this the reunion show/tour which they both claim to want! As far as I can see is the show has never been billed or promoted as a "reunion" show, by the official promoter the OC Fair. With all this finger pointing, he said, she said, there are obviously some things everyone needs to get over, and move past from. Ten years of animosity only equals a lot of unnecessary stress and wasted energy. As far as lawyers being involved, there is really nothing to sue for, or no permissions to be granted, authorizations to be made, no one ever made an official claim to the name, which really has no value after sitting unused for ten years. Put the egos aside, get over yourselves, your a small regional band that had a little taste of fame, but i'm sure had a lot of fun doing what you did well, and more importantly made a lot of people happy while you were doing it! Don't make this a "shoulda, coulda woulda" moment, that will surely lead to ten more years of animosity, make this a memorable experience where where everyone can walk away on top, ending with a positive experience and positive memories. Do it for the fans!

If Brian really cared about SF fans, why did he say no to playing this show and the "for the fans" Save Ferris tour in 2003?? Others came out ten years ago vouching that they were there when he quit the band and refused to do that tour for SF fans. Reliable sources have come out saying that they sat with a representative for Brian and other members that had quit SF prior to ask them to play this 2013 show. What EXACTLY is Brian's point? Does he just dislike women or is it just Mo?

I consider myself a rather huge (not physically) fan of Save Ferris. Listening to them for more than half my life, the songs never lose replay value. I've never seen them perform, and always thought Bill was a cool guy based on his hats alone. I met him finally at a Starpool show, love the guy, super down.

What Monique is doing is underhanded, especially since her solo projects were not only unsuccessful, but also deceiving (There were no mojos at the Mojo Wire show.... She must have eaten them all by the looks of her that night).

I am attending this show, only because I associate the music of Save Ferris with the amazing memories I've made listening to their records.

I can close my eyes and despite not hearing Brians covocals, can imagine it's the true Save Ferris, and with alcohol in my system, I can open my eyes and Monique might be attractive again.

To the people boycotting this event, I will not bash your efforts. I just hope your enjoyment of the SF classics aren't tarnished by her actions.

It's just par for the course. Those guys lost their shot because they couldn't have it their way. And it's obvious there's some hands in some pockets that are really pissed off right now that they couldn't cash in on Monique 's talent again. Its completely mysogonistic

@geebo1 too bad a lot of people know that Monique wrote that in a message to a fan on facebook....

@MoniquePowell Folks: This is obviously not Monique Powell but someone pretending to be her. You can parody people all you want, but at least pick a funny fake name. Failure to do so will result in a digital kick in the rear—you've been warned, troll!

@urbanagenda  "No one ever made a official claim to the name." That's not true, but the lawyers will sort that out. She doesn't have rights to the name. She does have co-writing credits to SOME songs, but everything was possible thanks to Brian. And it's not a matter of "fingerpointing", the rest of Save Ferris would have been DOWN to do a show if Mo would have asked them to, but she didn't ask. She went straight ahead and using the name for her own selfish gain. This has happen (and documented) before. Fans SHOULD be upset. Fans should put their voice out there. The guys in Save Ferris would have no problem hashing things out, but Monique doesn't want to. That's the thing a lot of "Pro-Mo" fans don't seem to understand. If Mo would have done the right thing, there wouldn't be this drama. This is why this is happening: Mo didn't do the right thing. Don't get me wrong, I agree with your sentiment, but it's just this has happened before and people are just calling out the BS because social media is more popular than it was the last time this happened.

vivalavinyl27
vivalavinyl27

@urbanagenda Well, booking a gig under the name "Save Ferris" with or without passing it by the other band members is not a good way ease the animosity...especially if you go ahead and pass yourself (Monique Powell) as "a band"...

I guess "Monique Powell of Save Ferris" isn't as catchy, huh?

Jay440
Jay440

@geebo1 Just stop. The vile BS you're spewing is unbelievable. Brian disliking women? Really? I know his girlfriend and his wonderful baby girl. And his girlfriend is a wonderful independent woman who is loved by Mashburn. I have known Brian for a decade and all he has show to me, a woman, is so much respect and support. So take your lies somewhere else. You MUST be Mo or one of her crazed fans.

vivalavinyl27
vivalavinyl27

@geebo1 Why did he say no to playing the Vegas show? Because the band had disbanded the year prior. Mo simply went on without him and is now going on without ANY of the other members of the band...clearly the problem lies with who has the rights to the name Save Ferris. She shouldn't have billed the show as "Save Ferris" when she's the only member (She should take note to what Dave Wakeling did with the English Beat...when he started up the US version of the band after they broke up, he billed the band as "Dave Wakeling's English Beat")...why can't Monique do this???

vivalavinyl27
vivalavinyl27

@fatasstaco I too was a huge fan of SF back in the 90s are early 2000s. I actually got to hang backstage a few times with the band...all of them super cool and friendly. I can tell you though that I personally saw a rift in the band as far as personalities towards the end of their run as a band leading into 2002. It seemed more like two camps offstage...it was "The Band" camp, and then there was "Monique's" camp...As much as I respect Monique Powell as a vocalist (and the fact I had the biggest crush on her), she's kind of a diva. Clearly the personality and artistic differences between the members of the band led to the demise of the group. So I see this could be an extension of those tensions, especially if Monique is booking gigs using the name Save Ferris without running it by the rest of the band members. Monique's vocals were a huge part of Save Ferris...let PART be the big word there...she is PART of Save Ferris. Without the rest of the band - including the amazing horn section (how can anyone replicate the energy of T-Bone, Eric, and Jose on stage??? Oliver is awesome too!). This is all Mo's ego at work here...she clearly feels SHE is Save Ferris. Sorry Mo, love ya and all....but you're a part of the band, not THE band.

kellympugh
kellympugh

@fatasstaco she's not doing anything underhanded, If Brian were so professional, why would he lie so often publicly to the fans that have only been loyal to him? If he cared about the fans, he would've put his hatred of women aside and played this show and the shows in 2003!!! And there's no need to mention her weight, that's mean and there is no need to get personal. This is about vocal talent, which she clearly has!

@kellympugh Or the lead singer enjoyed recreational activities more then singing while the guys still had actual interest in writing and playing music. After repeated attempts to get her to commit to reunion tours which were repeatedly denied she then went behind their backs to book this gig and call it Save Ferris when it only included on band member. Could David Lee Roth book a gig and call it a Van Halen reunion if only he is singing the songs?

@Jay440As mentioned in a previous reply, "I just shared my thoughts on getting past this, in hopes of possibly seeing a "reunion" show, without taking sides. Getting caught up in others affairs is not healthy or productive. If you too are a true fan who would like to see a reunion show, I would think you would love to relive some old memories. Please join my "call to action", for both sides to "put their money where their mouth is" and make this the reunion show/tour which they both claim to want!" I am not privy to the inside information you seem to be in on, based in delivery of your message it appears you are closely aligned with SF band members, if you are not a former member yourself, you seem a little too much in "the know" and a little too caught up in the affairs of a band that hasn't been around for over ten years. I don't know any of the members of SF, though I have been to many shows, beginning in the early years, I look forward to attending the OC Fair show, which however it turns out will be a great time, sharing fun and reliving memories with old friends and familiar faces. The obviously organized hate campaign against Mo, by the band members in the court of public opinion is petty and pathetic. This concerted effort by the band to defame her is sure to backfire on them, to most fans Mo is the sweetheart of the band most relate their SF memories with, the average fan has no clue, nor do they care about the infighting, or the behind the scenes bickering and drama, they just want see a fun show with good music. They are pretty much putting Mo in a position where it may be impossible to reunite with the band in fear of reprisal. Even if they have solid evidence to back up any claims they are making, most likely a judge wouldn't even hear the case, and would just throw it out, and even if they did these cases cost a lot to pursue, and there's no way these guys made a lot of money from the band, I would imagine they all have day jobs. If the negative campaign against her continued it could lead to the band impeding her right to perform, and possible defamation claims. I hope they can all work out their differences, and somehow figure out an agreement to allow them to play together and move on, and not spend a lifetime filled with bitterness and regrets.

I KNOW "Save Ferris" without Monique Powell is nothing, go ask Journey, Judas Priest, Van Hagar...

@vivalavinyl27 @geebo1 It should have been sold as Monique Powell formerly of Save Ferris. That would have been an honest representation to fans that were looking for a reunion. This is just sad and somewhat fraudulent. Glad I didn't buy a ticket and book a flight.

@kellympugh there are two sides to every story. If 6 people tell one story and 1 person tells a different story, well, you'd have to be a Grade A Moron from Bovine University to not see what's really going on.

Also... "the band" as Monique has stated had several line up changes, with only her being consistent. I wonder if the band she approached was one of the many different lineups she played with after 2003.

kellympugh

@PhxGwen as I said before she originally didn't know anything about this. When my friend got offered the show here in the UK, Monique knew nothing about this, and was shocked it was even mentioned. Why can't we all just get along :)
