Fox Theater Pomona
Last night the Filipino/Dutch DJ sensation Laidback Luke brought his signature mix of hip-hop and electro house to the Fox Theater in Pomona. Legally known as Luke Van Scheppingen, Laidback Luke has been killing it on the electronic music scene for the past 15 years. Know for his infamous Mixmash Records which continue to release hit after hit and his grand Super You & Me parties that sell out the biggest venues all over the world with it's audiences dressed in super hero get ups - Laidback Luke is one of the hardest working DJs and producers in the game who continues to amaze and wow his fans. This special Thursday night 18 and over event brought some serious dance music to the I.E. thanks to powerhouse promoters LED and Goldenvoice.
The show started at 11pm, noticeable early by EDM standards, and raged for a full two hours with in your face electro mash-ups and remixes of Luke's own originals as well as surprisingly a lot of Swedish House Mafia edits - perhaps playing homage to the 60,000 people event all of the EDM crowd will be attending this weekend at the Los Angeles Historic Park. We're not complaining however, as the vocals of of his track with SHM group mates "Leave the World Behind" echoed on the sound system we got carried away in anticipation. The crowd seemed fittingly for the Fox Theater's old school "rave" culture (this used to be the spot back in the early hey days of dance music) with kandi kids and girls in fluffies ready to get their shuffle on the packed dance floor.

You would think they could have spent a little more on the production value to create an experience and vibe at the venue like at the big EDM shows today. Regardless, the giant LED walls shaped like double L's for Laidback Luke blazing behind him, fog machines and lighting was in comparison just a couple of lasers and glow sticks shy of competing with their OC counterparts like at the Yost Theater. Revelers from the pit to the stands and the upstairs balcony sang along as Luke played his old school originals like "Till Tonight."
The dimly light room intensified with flashing strobe lights as the drop hit of every song and gave the show more of a festival vibe than a typical Thursday club night. Luke straight killed it with his seasoned stage presence as he danced around on stage not missing a beat. Our favorite part was when he would swing his arms around like a helicopter as to signal that something big was coming - and it did with a lot of heavy hitting tracks with everything from Tujamo & Plastic Funk's "Who" to his own new single "Pogo" featuring Majestic. Never playing a song for more than a few minutes he kept the crowd on their toes begging for more packing as many songs as he could into a two hour set.
Stirring things up a bit, he played Bauuer's "Harlem Shake" and put his shirt over his face as he waved a towel in the air. The crowd went nuts almost every couple minutes as he dropped trap and hip hop remixes including Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg's "Next Episode" and Jay-Z & Kanye West's "Ni**as in Paris." We loved the unpredictability here. Sure by the second hour he was playing his hits and collaborations with dance music's elite like "Speak Up," "Turbulence" and "1,2,3,4" but the way he reeled in the crowd and played a mix of old school stuff with today's hits seemed almost seamless for veteran DJ and we didn't want it to end!

Personal Bias: Laidback Luke is definitely in the top five of my favorite artist to watch. His energy and dance moves combined with his skills on the decks it's impossible not to get up and dance to this man!
The Crowd: Not your typical OC club rats and more of the Inland Empire crowd with die hard Laidback Luke Fans wearing his t-shirts and carrying huge banners. We even got a peace of kandi bracelet from a plur audience member.
Overheard in the Crowd: "Drinks are weak here I feel like I'm just drinking soda."
Random Notebook Dump: We heard Laidback Luke is not so "laid back" as he's a workaholic, but we found him to be the most humble guy ever always taking pictures with fans and even letting one fan have VIP backstage passes for his birthday.
