Five Songs to Play Before You Go See "Here Comes the Boom!"
|And Boom Goes the Kevin James!|
This weekend sees the release of the new Kevin James film Here Comes the Boom! We at the Weekly have been anticipating the movie's release for quite some time, if only because it gives us the chance to sneak the phrase "Here comes the Boom" far more often into regular conversation. Yes, "Boom" is an always enjoyably bit of onomonopia, so to get you pumped on your way to the theater, as well as to help ease a mention of the movie into workplace chatter, here's our official Booming playlist to help put the Boom in your Boombox!
DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - "Boom! Shake the Room" 1993
An MTV Party to Go favorite, "Boom! Shake the Room" is both a product of its time as well as a testament to the versatility of Will Smith. The closest that the Fresh Prince ever came to a hardcore rhyme style, here he gets jiggy with his "iggities" in order to get your party rocking.
KRS-ONE - "Return of the Boom-Bap" 1995
When people talk about traditional New York hip-hop as being "boom-bap," it's a reference to drums that thud at a level which could crushes skulls in every measure. The title track from blastmaster KRS-ONE's 1995 album exemplifies this quality, showing why and how "boom-bap" is that "original rap."
Vengaboys - "Boom Boom Boom Boom" 1998
The slow worldwide rise of the Vengaboys is one of the most under-reported phenomenons in recent memory. With an album that spent almost two years slowly setting the globe on fire, this fun dance outfit is responsible for much more than just the song from the Six Flags commercials. On "Boom Boom Boom Boom," they get their booms on, but if you would perhaps like something with a little more edge, we'd like to also suggest the Bloodhound Gang's cover.
