Musicos con Yo Soy 132: The Anti-Rebecca Black Pack!

UPDATE, JUNE 8, 2:21 P.M.: A major scandal continues to erupt in Mexico just as a number of musicians co-signed onto one of #YoSoy132's objectives in demanding democracy and equality in the media. Allegations have surfaced in Britain's Guardian newspaper that PRI presidential candidate Enrique Peña Nieto (EPN) was the benefactor of favorable coverage purchased on Televisa, an empire that dominates television channels in the country and that has been accused by a rising tide of protests of manipulation in service of a future EPN presidency.

Hey, Rebecca Black, it's not too late to change your supportive statements of a candidate embroiled in even more controversy. There's still time to go against the grain all in the name of good ol' fashioned teenage rebellion!

ORIGINAL POST, JUNE 8, 5:00 A.M.: Various Mexican musicians declared their solidarity with the country's burgeoning #YoSoy132 movement recently, reading a joint statement together in a newly released video. Fashioning a hashtag identity for themselves, #MusicosconYoSoy132 took the opposite position that infamous Anaheim Hills YouTube-singing celebrity Rebecca Black did late last month when she traveled to Mexico and openly endorsed PRI presidential candidate (and total tool!) Enrique Peña Nieto.

Like the movement dubbed by many as the 'Mexican Spring,' the musicians echoed calls for impartiality and honesty in the media in order to cultivate an informed, critical citizenry and not a manipulated one in the lead up to the country's July 1 elections.

Mexico City singer-songwriter and producer Natalia LaFourcade is the first musician introduced in the initial installment. Other names from the indie-alternative scene appear lending their support including acts that have spoken to the Weekly in the past, including Ximena Sariñana, Juan Manuel Torreblanca, Madame Récamier and Hello Seahorse!

All are easier on the ears than Black, whose uncle just happens to be a Cuernavaca city council member with the PRI in the Mexican state of Morelos, and deserve a wider audience for their stand. More musicians, probably compromising other genres, are slated to appear in a follow-up video demanding a free and informed vote next month. In the meantime, check out interviews I conducted for the Weekly with some of those comprising #MusicosconYoSoy132!

Apologist for egregious human rights abuses by omission are we?

Atenco is shorthand for an episode in which the violent left, those inspired by the Zapatistas, were defeated by the institutional government of Mexico. That angered many leftists who long for the day when People Power takes over everything. The Atenco protesters saw no problem taking over a government building at a time Marcos was busy running around Mexico City. I would say most Mexicans supported their governments effort to restore law and order at Atenco. it is not like there is Universal support for the Left. EPN will probably win. So the answer is to gang up on Rebecca?

Nobody's forming a bullying pack. It's just that these musicians, in stark contrast, do not allow their role as artists to be exploited by EPN. They actually could probably care less about Black herself. As for me? "Todos Somos Atenco" was the banner a handful of local activists and I stood by the entrance of a SanTana Wal-Mart with. Six years later, I don't forget who the repressive governor was at the time.

If you are concerned about violence "like, in our neighbor to the south", you would actually be supporting the candidate who was supposedly endorsed by Rebecca Black, and not follow some populistic packs organized by empty headed crowds who actually don't care about this issue because they support the party which has started the policies unleashing unprecedented violence levels. Rebecca at least has the brains to realize that and courage to go against populistic brainwashed crowd. And forming a pack against a 14 year old is cyber bullying which is illegal in this country. I hope Ms Black's family prosecutes Gabriel San Roman.

except the issue is that I think the PRI is did some reality distortion making her seem more supportive of him then she actually is. The video I linked explains how it seems to be a setup

Because this could potentially one of the most important elections ever in Mexico, you know, like, our neighbor to the south, who has, like, been suffering from severe violence that, like, has spilled over to our country- that's why it's news!!!! Now Miss Black voluntarily injected herself in the politics of the PRI monster so she better be ready for backlash (merited or not). Tragic thing is she probably hasn't a clue about EPN or the state of Mexico so I blame her parents/handlers for placing her in this situation. Good reporting Gabriel- very relevant news and incredible that the other news sources haven't been covering this (no surprise there!!)

Shame on picking on a local teen, OC register! And Gabriel San Roman, what have been YOU up to recently? Why to pick on this news if nobody else does? Why are you so negative towards a 14 year old. At least she speaks for what she believes in. What are YOUR political standings, Gabriel? We certainly would love to delve into them.

"At least she speaks for what she believes in..." She shouldn't speak about mexican politics in México since she's a foreigner. I don't know how much money she received, but it's against the law. She must be happy that law here, is not respected, she will be "persona non grata" like manu chao. At least Manu Chao was really interested in Mexico's way, she supporting the worst candidate, who will bring more repression and more corruption to our country. A murderer, a liar, an unfaithful person with a family that calls our people contemptuously "prole"...
