Five Reasons Skrillex Should Have Won Best New Artist at the Grammys

On Sunday, Skrillex won three Grammys: Best Dance Recording, Best Dance/Electronica Album and Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical. So why didn't he win the Grammy for Best New Artist?

We all know Sonny John Moore is the one of the most hardworking people in the industry, but it doesn't mean his music is the best--but it can't be denied that his name and marketability is a huge reason EDM is now considered a legitimate genre in America. And if he had won Best New Artist, it would've meant that EDM has gained respect from the Recording Academy. We like this.

And even though Bon Iver (who was, admittedly, Skrillex's main competition) won the award, we give you four reasons why Skrillex should've won Best New Artist.

5. He was Grammy's Poster Boy in LA

The Grammy billboards on the streets of LA had Skrillex all over them. He's the first dance artist to be nominated for "Best New Artist," and he's already on a billboard?

4. He's Done Numerous High-Profile Collaborations

Skrillex collaborated with surviving members of The Doors in the song "Breakn' A Sweat," but he's also worked with Korn, Orgy, Ellie Goulding and Sirah. Skrillex has also remixed songs from La Roux, Lady Gaga and Benny Benassi.

3.  He's Sold Out Seven Consecutive LA Headlining Dates.

Credit must be given to a DJ who dedicates the time to perform every night for their home crowd and sells out the shows in hours.

2. He's the Most Commercial Name in EDM

His music has been on countless TV commercials and has heavy play on KROQ and Power 106. MTV is now covering a DJ that is not named Deadmau5 or David Guetta. NewsWeek shot a mini documentary on the guy and released in this week.

1. He's Not Just a DJ, He's a Talented Musician

His music can be called pure noise, but one must look at his producing talent. Sonny makes catchy upbeat melodies, and tuns them into his own chaotic experience. He makes his own string arrangements and sings on his tracks.

The guy understands rock, metal, pop, electro... and can whip up a bloody damn beat and tune in about no time. Oh well, apparently very few people remember what a tune or a beat are, blame it on the formatting and standardization that's taken up studios and "artists" by storm. What are we left with? RnB, Rap, HipHop and Dubstep silos within which all songs sound pretty much the same. Skrillex doesn't give a damn about silos and labels and so forth, he's combining brilliance with dirty drops, making beats heavier or shinier, whatever, and honestly, though I'm technically old enough to be his mother, he's one of the few whose sounds and vibes will pull me to the dancefloor like a frigging magnet!! GO SKRILL!!!

ONLY ONE of the reasons you said had to do with Skrillex's actually music producing abilities, the rest was just marketability. Just because someone has sold a lot of albums, does not make them "talented." I don't understand people that can listen to a Skrillex set for forty minutes, because it's just the same noise the entire time.  It's not dubstep, it's a distorted view of electronic crap-step that he likes to think of as dubstep.  And also who you collaborate with shouldn't impact winning a Grammy, cause you can collaborate with someone great and still put out a shitty track. If you want GOOD dubstep from the people that don't get as much attention as Skrillex, listen to Bassnectar, Pretty Lights, Nit Grit, Rusko, Vibesquad, Skream, Benga, and so many other greats.

wow THIS is why people should win grammys? because they look good on a billboards and have connections? hmm i thought the grammy's were for talented musicians who made eclectic beautiful music. And sure he's sold out shows but that only cause electronic music is only fun live because it's the equivilant of a rave. and most people at them are on so many drugs that they dont care if the music all sounds the same.

"ruined dubstep". that's my favourite misguided, ignorant argument ever. what the fuck are you seriously even talking about??? elitist music snobs who try to tell you what is or isn't "good music"....you all should jump off a cliff. music, like all art is subjective. which means something you like might be utter shit to someone else, but the doesn't give you the right to say it's not music. don't like it? don't listen. take your narrow-mided, misinformed opinion  elsewhere. go listen and watch shit you actually like. it's not that complicated.

skrillex is a fucking joke, HE RUINED THE DUBSTEP SCENE AND continues to make electronic musics name laughable, u think he works hard... there are FAR TO MANY other electronic music producers who get no fame and make music that is in no comparison SOO MUCH better than the disgusting dub skrillex tries to put together, he is so sloppy and unoriginal, doesnt deserve any fame or ANY of the grammys he one, thank god he didnt win best new artist of the year THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MUSICAL SUCCESS AND COMMERCIAL SUCCESS and this is the reason why the grammys and main stream music of america is A FUCKING JOKE. far to many artists out there whos talent extremely soars over skrillex or any other mainstream electronic, pop, or hip hop artist

Is there an editor at the OC Weekly anymore?  How old is the author of this post?  This is some very poor writing.

Collaborating w/ Korn should be the main reason someone shouldn't win a Grammy. Maybe he could have earned some cred in the late 90s. Has Korn been relevant since 2000? I could destroy the other 4 reasons as well, but I'll let it go.

I can think of a 6th reason.  Who the heck is Bon Iver?

No disrespect for Skrillex, but Bon Iver was nominated for album, song and record of the year, and none of the other best new artist nominees were, so it was kind of telegraphed how the wind was blowing.

Hahahah, the new "editor" is Gussy Arell-ano (!?!).  He learned all he needed to know from Jose Luis Sin Censura.  Just wait till his book comes out, its called "Tio Tacos de America - how Vendidos got all arecha for the reconquista that never came"

The online articles & blogs are horrendous now. The music articles in Heard Mentality annoy the shit out of me. Either the staff is going downhill extremely fast or I'm becoming old & grumpy. Could be a little of both. It seems like very little effort is being put into these articles though. Get off my lawn!

how about armin, swedish house, alesso, avicii, dada life, or jaytech. all these artist have been working way harder and use actual dj equipment. skrillex just road the mainstream wave up like a bitch.  no respect and i hope people realize how bad his music is. Its so bad the biggest electronic radio station refuses to play his music! hows that for best artist? come on man how about you recognize some one with real talent?
