Atlantis 2011: The Show Will Go On, With Less Stages and Earlier Closing Time

atlantis 2011.jpg
First things first: Rumors going around that the electronic event Atlantis 2011 is cancelled are not true. The show, which will have Dash Berlin, Headhunterz, DJ Isaac, Heatbeat, Miles Dyson, Starkillers, Swanky Tunes, Mord Fustang, Cookie Monsta, Chaosphere and 6blocc spinning, will go on as scheduled tomorrow at Oak Canyon Ranch in Silverado.

However, producers Motive Events sent out an announcement saying they've had to change the structure of the event due to pressure from the Orange County Sheriff's office and a bias against electronic dance music events (that's EDM to you). Instead of three stages, organizers will be combining area 2 and area 3 (electro house and dubstep) and closing the event at 2 a.m. instead of 3 a.m. Read the full statement after the jump.
We regret to inform our fans that due to overwhelming pressure from the Orange County Sheriffs office, and our lawyers, Motive Events and its partners have been forced to make changes to this years "Atlantis festival" in order to continue with the show.

Motive Events and its managing partners strive to create memorable EDM events year after year. We believe in our hearts that EDM events stand for and represent American freedom. Freedom to dance, freedom to express, freedom to play, and freedom to exist on your terms.

We always believed that dance events should be open to EVERYONE regardless of age, race, gender, attire, or preference.

In 2011 Motive Events and the rest of california's EDM production companies have been forced to make restrictions. Restrictions on age, restrictions on attire, restrictions on expression. Motive has fought all year against these restrictions. Well this fight has finally caught up to us. Due to the stigma that EDM events bring and the reputation our scene currently has, it has become severely difficult to produce larger events in southern california.

The rising police and security costs have forced us to make changes to our "Atlantis Festival". We will be combining area 2 and area 3 in order for the police to "contain the event safely" and to cut down on city fees and over time reimbursement.

All headliners for each of those areas are still scheduled to play, however some supporting acts have been cut or rescheduled for future events due to time restraints. The Orange County Sheriffs Department also does not feel comfortable with the event going till 3am. We do not feel it is a fight we can win. With that being said we have chosen to close the event at 2am. Time slots and a new map will be on our website tonight. We apologize for these inconveniences but the show must go on...

I had a amazing time there... Getting in was weird because we waited like a our in line but come to find out that because i had a Flavorus ticket card I was told that they had a separate line where i waited 5 minutes then they searched me and I was in the event. Security was non existent. It was a fun night. HARDSTYLE 4 LIFE!!!JT

Totally unorganized event as we waited for 3.5 hours to get in, which was already half the length of the event. They also charged $20 for parking, which there was no way out of since we were in the middle of nowhere. Then they tried to up-sell us telling us there is an express line for $20. How crazy is that? Purely disgusting behavior by Motive Events. Everyone was just pissed off waiting in line w/ no restrooms out there and not enough security to straighten out the line and keep people from cutting. This was the most ridiculous wait I've ever been in and WILL NOT ever go to another event sponsored by Motive. Whoever is reading this, please do the same. Motive will not learn a lesson or improve their behavior if we don't do something about it. If someone can create a facebook page protesting against Motive, that'd be great too. We will not tolerate the way you guys do business. Freedom of speech- please do not delete this. Thanks for reading.

Amen to that. There were redeeming qualities to this event, and I had fun, But it was horribly run.

But I'll start with the good news.

Pros - Small crowd made it easy to get up front and still dance. getting around, bathrooms, and water/beer lines were a breeze. Security/cops were almost nonexistent. the sound at the side stage was loud, clean, and well balanced. Light gloves were allowed, and they were absolutely everywhere. Definitely the highest lightshows to people ratio i've ever seen. Cool location; it reminded me of what I've heard about the underground massives back in the day. Last but not least, Mord Fustang. That man is amazing. I drove 7 hours just for him, and he still blew all my expectations out of the water. I didn't even dance that hard at edc.

Now for the bad news. Cons - most were already mentioned above, but it all comes down to money. First, as this article outlines, this was not the show we were promised. 3 stages became 2,fewer acts, and a 2am close. But we showed up anyway. Charging for parking was wholly unnecessary. Then when we realized the line wasn't moving, we paid another $20 for the express line, which wasn't exactly express. Motive had printed special tickets for this express line; they planned way in advance for this extortion. But the real anger set in once we got inside. First, it was empty, and would remain that way throughout the night. It was clear that they were holding the line back just so they could push the 'express line'. And what were they spending all this extra money on? It wasn't the stages. The light setup was a joke. Good thing there were gloves around. It wasn't the venue, this was a couple acres in the middle of nowhere. It wasn't the artists, they didn't even have to pay the 1/4 of them that they cancelled. Motive must have spent next to nothing on this event. At the end of the day, it just had this vibe of a smash and grab job. Maybe they were losing money on the event and all of this was a last ditch effort to break even. Maybe they just got greedy. Either way, when all was said and done, I felt used. I felt dirty. We all got played. Never again, motive. Never again.
