El Centro Cultural de México Given 60 Day Extension

A weekly volunteer meeting at El Centro in 2009
El Centro Cultural de México, the community space in downtown Santa Ana that was originally to be vacated from its current location six days from now, has received a 60-day extension from the property owning and management company Broadway Improvement Inc. The organization, which offers numerous free dance, music, education and arts classes was originally alerted of the extension the day after a June 28 weekly volunteer meeting open to the public. Members of El Centro wanted to see the extension in writing before announcing it; today the official announcement was received in the mail at the group's P.O. Box address.

A signed letter dated June 30 from David L. Williams, Secretary Treasurer of Broadway Improvement, stated that an extension would be granted on the conditions that rent for the next two months be paid accordingly, keys be turned in on or before the required date to vacate the premises, and the space be left in "broom clean condition." Addressed to the "Board of Directors," it ends,"There will be no right to holdover beyond the extension of the Thirty Day Notice to Quit the Premises dated June 9, 2011."

The new date for El Centro to clear out, given this most recent development, is September 14. "A sixty-day extension would not be considered a victory for us," says SAUSD teacher and Centro volunteer Benjamín Vázquez. Although Vazquez says it was the decent thing to do, he adds, "we as volunteers of El Centro and Santa Ana feel the city can do much more to find a permanent place." The organization still has not found a new space.

Much of the story of the Centro saga has centered around that fact that it will soon be without a space. What exactly is being pushed out? "It has more of an impact when listed," Vázquez says. "We have guitar, son jarocho, zumba, danza azteca, ballet folklorico, belly dance, yoga, salsa, cumbia, danzón, flamenco, educarte (art for Kids), Barrio Writers, adult education, philosophy circle, self defense, SAPO (mural project), Barrio Actors Guild, jewelry making and a rock band classes." That's about 20 classes in all, son!

Jose Luis Gallo of La Causa Films was on hand at the aforementioned community volunteer meeting to record testimonials of those present. The resulting YouTube video above shows various people talking about what the Centro has meant to them personally and why it's of vital importance to the community.

Type your comment here."our dance workshop provides individuals with a space that ameliorates their immigrant experience here in the U.S.; country in which these people (including myself) have sadly discovered that the so desired American dream it is just an illusion. In sum,  "El centro" is a space where people can find a sense of identity and acceptance that the society they live and interact in has failed to give them.

MQ says:

If the American dream is just an illusion, then I suggest you try finding any thing like this country out side this country!!!! I understand wanting to be close to your own, I too as an Irish immigrant find it comforting to be close to other Irish people, but your center is different. You know as well as I do that the gathering that took place in your center that was put together by a bunch of misguided hispanic youth on thanksgiving was not only racist (anti-white) but was very anti-american. It is a constant thyme in your center and If you are the same person I spoke to (Santa Ana teacher) then you know you said, " That you do not always approve of what is being advocated at the center!".You feel lost in this country, because you have Never embraced it! You are lost and feel isolated in this country because you are Anti-American, most likely a liberal, victim of the white collar white man etc.......Mexicans did not lose land they gained a place to come to, that educates, feeds and cares more for their kids than Mexico would ever do.

No sir, the truth is that America, its people, immigrants from all over this world are now burdened by a people that routinely ie.... Mexico Vs USA insults, and infuriates the people of this land and that includes me. No one hates anyone in this country ( well maybe a few idiots do) but people are too busy just getting through life. But I just in the last few years living here have come to know that with all this country gives to the immigrants that have entered into this country illegally they seem to constantly bite that hand that feeds them and their children grow up with a lost sense of loyalty of this country and a misguided love for a country that their parents tracked across a desert to escape from.

As hard as it has been here away from my family, my birth country, I am blessed that I live here. I instill in my kids a strong sense that yes mom and dad are from Ireland, but they are American, to always defend, love and cherish a country that provides them with so much. That is sadly lost in the Mexican immigrant house holed because for them America is a place to take from and that is about it! Santa Ana has one of the worst school districts in the nation, the children are becoming fatter by the minute and children having children is abundant. Dancing and learning about cultures is not want is needed in Santa Ana... Thanks, have to run...Have a lovely day!

Bye the way, I never said that people who where uneducated are stupid, in fact I find that the stupidest people I have met in this country are Well educated. Sorry, for any typos, don't have time to proofread!

First of all Mexican is not a race...Lets clear that little race card up! Don't try to use Jesus Christ with me girl...I am Irish, Catholic and Christ wants no part in my beef with your culture and your center! The only oppression there is in Santa Ana is the oppression of the stupid leading the non educated. You see love, I'm coming form a place that was victimized by the stupid leading the uneducated can tell you that the center you love so much, did nothing but teach you that your culture, your race matters more than reality. The reality it that Santa Ana is full of uneducated, welfare recipients that are drawn to a center that tells them that their miserable existence is due to the white man taking their land and that is just propaganda crap. Feed your crap love to the American's who seem to have more tolerance for idiots! If you want a place to go to, go to a church or a place that has Irish, Italians, etc... and listen to what really matter's the truth and not your ethnocentric crap that YOUR people feed you. Take from a girl that knows ethnocentric shite!  Ochoa, wise up with your race shit, your race is not the problem, it's your culture and you need to get out of your Mexican bubble! Go see Ireland! Hang with a few white folks that are not from here, they wont feed you the "poor minority crap".

Michelle Quinn
Michelle Quinn

Will this is great news....No more little racist, ethnocentric gatherings like the Anti-Thanksgiving event, or the event where a 16 + kid denounced his cross because it was given to him by a white man! This center is nothing but a mexican hole of racist and ethnocentric teachings! Good news that it is closed!

Michelle Quinn
Michelle Quinn

Yes, and If you read the posters behind miss left wing propaganda you can also see the words: right for rights, fight for affordable housing blah, blah...What this center is, is a left wing, racist, ethnocentric hole that takes the mush brains of kids and tells them that they are victims of the system and they got to fight. And then after the propaganda, there is the cultural dancing.....STUPID!

Of course you do and that is why Los Angeles is a sub-cultured dumb!

Hello,     Michelle I am the coordinator of Salsa and Cumbia at El Centro cultural de Mexico. I am a Mexican/ American with indigenous and also Cuban ancestry. I do proclaim ties with   my Mexican heritage, but I am proud to be one and all. I graduated from UCI with a B.A. in literature and culture and soon will be getting my masters as other coordinators I know from "El Centro." To refute your comment, I do not consider myself to be "stupid leading the non educated." To give you just a little bit of more information, so you do not misunderstand the structure we use in our dance class: I coordinate and make sure everything runs smoothly and best as possible, so the experience of every individual is fulfilling and enjoyable in our class. We as a dance group, understand that our two hours at "El centro" is a coping experience from a society that best treats the individuals who say "I shop therefore I am." Fortunately,  our dance workshop provides individuals with a space that ameliorates their immigrant experience here in the U.S.; country in which these people (including myself) have sadly discovered that the so desired American dream it is just an illusion. In sum,  "El centro" is a space where people can find a sense of identity and acceptance that the society they live and interact in has failed to give them. We as a group, are friends that know have something in common. To be honest with you I am proud of my group!

In your first comment,  you wrote  "great news....No more little racist, ethnocentric gatherings." It seems to me (with much respect that ow you) that you have not spend more than a day at "El centro." If you have had, then it has only been to criticize and judge it negatively. " I am really surprised that you affirm to be "Irish, Catholic." What have you been listening to at mass? "Leviticus 19:18      Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any GRUDGE  against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.

Leviticus 19:34      But the STRANGER that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt LOVE him as thyself; for ye WERE STRANGERS in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.

Matthew 7:12      Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

If you posses good comprehension skills you will understand the message...

As to further comment on the word you used to vaguely describe "El centro"as  ethnocentric... I can surely tell you that we as a group have the fortune and the pleasure to have  individuals from Cuba, Guatemala, El salvador, Argentina, Vietnam, Peru and Anglo, Puerto Rico, African American, Indigenous and of course Mexicans they enrich us with their beautiful accents and experiences they have to share with us. Some of them as you said might be uneducated, others are educated but that does not mean they are "stupid." What this interprets to is that they have not had the opportunity to go to school for what ever reason.... monetary primarily.... they do not live on "welfare" as you mentioned... Ironically they are hardworking first generation (most)  women and men that wake up every morning to fulfill their duties responsibly.

Yes, it is true that we Mexicans lost part of our land.... at the hands of  some Whites ...Through the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.  That is part of our history.  Nonetheless, "El centro" does not " tells [us] that [our] miserable existence is due to the white man taking [our] land. Contrary it it a Center that dives up in different workshops that helps individuals express positively (through dance, music, writing education (GED), paiting, drawing etc. how they feel within a society with individual like you that STEREOTYPE, JUDGE, HATE without deeply studying what the immigration experience consists of.

HAVE YOU ASSIMILATED MICHELLE? HAVE YOU BEEN JUDGE BY YOUR COLOR?  HAVE YOU FELT REJECTED ONE IN YOUR LIFE IN THE U.S? DO YOU FEEL AMERICAN?

To finish up,  "El centro" is everything except "Ethnocentric and Racist." You are welcome to come to our workshop and ask to any non Mexican individual if they have been discriminated against. Not in my class, I am sure. On the contrary, I believe that collective and individual experiences have much to teach us.To say Santa Ana is full of Uneducated people that live on Welfare is a lie. I live in Santa Ana... I do not fit the category. I know many that do not fit the category... please do not generalize.... Universal truths do not exist... if you have taken a philosophy course you might know what i am referring to.

Have a nice day Michelle I hope you start reading a little bit more about the immigrant experience in general... about culture and its importance at the individual level.... if you need any books to read I can recommend you some. :)

p.s. If you found any mistakes. It is because I am more fluent in Spanish than I am in English. Sorry for the inconvenience....

alright the reality is.. that youre a fucken bitch :) you have you eyes closed. never once did i state that i live my life believing that my culture is superior to yours!i respect other cultures and their practices....  so dont put words in my mouth quinn. yes its true that santa ana isnt as prosperous as other cities, but that doesnt mean that we are uneducated. most of the people  left a place of hell to create a better future for us, and for their grandkids. why? because they care about other people other than themselves. im catholic too dumbass! if you want no beef with my culture and my center.. then why the fuck did you bother and comment?! yet another hypocritical action. i am of Mexican decent... and my mother is very well educated. my brother is a college graduate, I am attending college, and so are so many other people that live in santa ana. so dont fucken call me or any one of us idiots. Quinn wise up about reality. because in reality... its people JUST LIKE YOU that fucked up this world. you have  judged a whole group of people without knowing them and knowing the story behind them. the story that makes them a better person that you will ever be. i never talked bad about all irish people because i have some very good irish friends that are the complete opposite of you so dont feed me the "white folk are better than everyone else" bullshit. cuz your ass just proved to me that you're not.

1. We would love to stay in our home countries. Sadly, destructive globalization policies like NAFTA have decimated our wages in our home countries, as we’ll as here. When NAFTA was on the table, Clinton was warned of the backlash that would be felt in the future, for all participating countries, including the United States. But he went ahead. Then we got a war hawk bozo of a president after him transfer all of the surplus into the hands of his friends the weapons makers and private contractors (Blackwater, Halliburton) and now we find ourselves in the mess we are in. Check the stats for migration before and after NAFTA was passed. While you’re at it, check ALL the facts. We are economic refugees forced to flee to a country that exploits us from afar and exploits and discriminates against us when we reach its borders, many dying on the road to perdition. Ironic, since this was the type of treatment Irish, Italian, Polish, and most other immigrants received. The victim becomes the perpetrator, of course. But instead of taking accountability for their actions, a surge of xenophobia has taken root in America, and its sickening. First the war was against indians, then blacks and browns, then Muslims, and now against everybody who doesn’t fit into the neo-con mind frame (gays, undocumented brothers, unions, peace activists, environmentalists, etc.) put together by elitists like Rupert Murdoch and The Koch Brothers. It’s so easy to talk ignorantly about the issues, but once you start looking at the facts, the truth hits you in the face. The funny thing is instead of waking some of you up, it seems the truth hits, but no one is home.

2. We don’t celebrate American culture? What is American Culture? Sports, celebrities, money and extreme individualism and “step on your brother to get to the top” mentality. If anything, the only real culture that America has comes primarily from African Americans(jazz, blues, rock and roll, MIchael Jordan etc.)

Lets call it like it is. This isn’t a democracy or even a republic, it is a PLUTOCRACY.

With that said, we have rich deep roots going back hundreds of years to a golden era, while Europe was immersed in the dark ages. And still, we celebrate the so-called holidays imposed on all of us by the materialist, consumerist society: thanksgiving (pilgrims sat down with the Indians, then nearly wiped them out after they learned how to grow food), Independence Day (what independence? long gone with the patriot act. we love America, we hate their policies…yes its possible), labor day (Americans WILL NOT work in the fields, dont think so? ask Georgia growers, we put food on your table, and you throw us scraps), Christmas (were all about a big, fat, white guy giving us gifts…..replaced our 3 wise men!), memorial day(how many latinos have died for this country? who killed Osama Bin Laden? hmmm..) and so on.

All of the racist and ignorant comments seem to be coming from one side. The side of fear, which produces anger, and ignorant thoughts and actions. Take accountability for your actions, learn the history, get the facts and stop the xenophobia. Whether you like it or not, we aren’t going anywhere. If some of you had it your way, you’d have the modern day trail of tears down the 5 South to Mexico (that’d be a very long 20 million people deep line), but it aint gunna happen. We are the future, and it scares you to death. You made us who we are, we are you, cant you see? Yes, change is scary, but it is upon us. We aren’t trying to take California back, we are just trying to find our place in this society that will not allow us to sit at the table of justice and equality. You love the cheap labor, you hate us. You love that we pick your fruit and veggies, make your beds, take care of your children and elderly (viva Schwarzenegger anyone?/if you dont send them to a nursing home first), serve you, feed you, but don’t want to give us simple human rights and universal worker rights? You love that slavery hasn’t ended, it is alive and well, and now you don’t even have to house and feeds us! We need REAL change in the world, not just a slogan stolen from Cesar Chavez used as a catch phrase. And its going to take the whole world to make it happen. I love America, I love my white, socially-conscious white brothers, but man do I hate how America continually fails to live up to its ideals “that all men were created equal”. You didn’t really believe it then (slavery) and you really don’t believe it now (corporate de-facto slavery, military/prison-industrial complex, degrading immigrant labor). Y’all just want us to be good Mexicans, take our land like you did at the turn of the century, take our horses (cars) through so called D.U.I. checkpoints, and keep us in constant fearful, poverty-stricken, dis-empowered state. But NO MORE!!!

The dying whale whips, flails and thrashes about violently as it holds on to dear life. But the fact remains, it is dying, and from its ashes a new one will emerge. This is the beginning of the end of the paradigm of fear, the one all of you racists belong to. Welcome to the new age…one of love, compassion, justice, social responsibility, peace, and unity. In one word, oneness. Its either that, or its the end of the world as we know it. Either way, we are ready.

No better example then MLK. You called him all sorts of names, beat him, kicked him, spit on him and his friends and finally killed him and many activists. Now you have a holiday for him and even have a black president, but he’s just a puppet, so it matters little (more blacks broke or in jail then ever!). How much changes in 40 years and how much will change in our lifetime..

So we see America DOES have heart and it DOES come its senses, but not without a struggle, not without a fight. We are the growing voice of dissent, and we will not be silenced easily. Get used to it. We don’t have just one leader, that you can behead to end our movement, we are all leaders…..AND WE ARE NOT AFRAID!!!!!!

“Free at last! Free at last! Dear God almighty, we’re free at last” MLK

Thank you,

Okay honestly... you have absolutely no right to be saying that these people are racist. You yourself are being extremely racist towards Mexicans. You have no idea what this place means to so many people; however, you wouldn't know about culture and morals since you obviously show no respect for other people and their beliefs. This place has been a safe haven and almost a second home to numerous people! How would you like it if someone told you that you couldn't live in your house anymore? You wouldn't like that, no one would. Because you have stated that (and I quote) "This center is nothing but a mexican hole of racist and ethnocentric teachings" ... you have proven to everyone who is/will read this article that you are nothing but a racist and a hypocrite.

Cynthia Perez
Cynthia Perez

Well honestly I will respect your point of view because it is yours even if I do not agree with you. I must point out, you are being very closed minded about how you look at the situation. But in my experience in being a youth that benefited from this Centro, I can tell you that I have started to search my identity of who I am as a human being and what I want to do to help others such as how mentors helped me there. I’m not a racist person, I believe in the respect to our mother nature, I believe that Jesus Christ came to show us a example of living life in a humble life. But i also believe that people choose to act foolish and be disrespectful to the ways others choose to live their life, so it doesn’t make sense when people try to back up ideas and beliefs when they can’t go by and live it themselves. . The truth of the past has been exposed and people take it differently. I choose to follow my beliefs and also adapt other ideas and wisdom of fellow youth, kids, women & men, because we are all equal. What ever culture & faith we choose to live, it should always be respected. You have no idea what this place has done for me and others that just simply want to live a good life, having our past as a reminder and tool to get us through the struggles we live day to day. And the people that cannot be open minded to be part of their own community, to challenge the negative and the oppression, to empower the people, or to live and be kind in this life. They choose to simply be in a hole of ignorance.

Michelle you said:"I did think Bush was not the brightest spark in the world. Instead of trying to fight an enemy you cant see, we should have banned all travel and immigration out of muslim countries and taken their oil, but of course liberals like you would have cried out in protest for all the poor abused muslims and so we sent our American kids into countries where men bury their women up to their necks and stone them, we sent our kids to try to help a people who live like animals and treat their children and women like dirt....."

This statement is highly racist, xenophobic and ignorant. You have stereotype a 1 billion+ people into stone weilding woment killers. You dont have any right to their oil. Continous western interference has caused the mess in the middle east. The kingdoms were carved by the british after first world war. Iran was a democracy til 50s but CIA overthrew the government to install a king that was later replaced by an Islamist regime.. Ochoa,

So educated in the langue of the street...Lol. The Irish people you met, where Irish/Americans! Did I raise you just a little...good, lets chat....White folk and brown folk are the same.....both full of crap and both out there for their own ends! You girl need to learn that! Cut out the cussing, it makes you look trashy and that is good advise. My fucked up world as you put it, is surrounded by laughing kids, washed dogs and working 12 hours a day. My fucked up hours, also contain moments of jumping a dead car for a trapped driver, cleaning the ass of my kid in between and then on Sunday going to mass to asked God forgiveness for hating the fact that I pay for losers.

I hate your center for all the right reasons because I am well versed in the art of hearing losers feeding kids bull shit....YOU kids will learn that in due time, hopefully like most of your mate's you will refrain like I did from mating until you actually find someone who will help feed his own and not rely on the daddy government! And really where the heck did I say white folk are better, I did say meet more cultures that are white because in America for some reason white is looked down on.... We are a culture of the druids, romans, Spartans... etc.........

Ya you are quite the shining example of a human being. Spewing religion with one hand, and filth with the other; you don't even know who you are, really, do you? Confused.

Nonetheless, the 3 people reading this and the one person commenting means this entire thread and conversation is 100% useless and trivial. It won't change anything, no one cares, so save your breath and do something constructive than "hating" and swearing like a back alley whore.

And bye the way, I nannied for years when I first came to this country, it was a job and when I would go to the parks the Mexican nannies would have nothing to do with me...There loss, I would say because I happen to be a blast to hang out with... Be happy with the job that you have, in these changing times of fortune take comfort in the fact that you have a job because many people are staving in this world and if it takes cleaning someones ass (which I have done) or digging a ditch then do expect a medal for doing it....Take pride in your work and know that your work is a reflection of your character....YOU seem to think Mr. sense that doing manual labor should be rewarded with a medal....Well kid that is not going to happen, I was just happy with the 5 dollars an hour! I think the dopey Austrian paid his Mexican nanny very nicely, and what a cow for betraying Maria's trust!

We come here because this is the best country in the world, hands down! No other country in the world has a better standard of living...It's not an easy living and yes, we have to work our butts off, but the rewards of living in this country are many!

As far as NAFA is concerned you can thank the Mexican government for again finding away to get rid of their poor! I think after the signed NAFTA they sent out a map of the AZ desert and a bottle of water. I don't think they like their people too much!!!!!

"We don’t celebrate American culture? What is American Culture? Sports, celebrities, money and extreme individualism and “step on your brother to get To the top” mentality. If anything, the only real culture that America has comes primarily from African Americans(jazz, blues, rock and roll, MIchael Jordan etc.) "

MQ says:

American cultural love is the reason WHY this country is the best country in the world and the reason why people come here. Individual freedom the chance to achieve better than the parents, hard work etc.... What you state is the culture of a small portion of the population of this country called college students and welfare recipients and yes, I agree it is a problem. Just look at the kids coming out of Santa Ana, they know more about the next American Idol than the English or math. And what you call extreme individualism is what brings a kid from the falls road and takes them a cross the sea on their own! Or even a kid from Mexico to cross a hot desert.

"Yes, change is scary, but it is upon us. We aren’t trying to take California back, we are just trying to find our place in this society that will not allow us to sit at the table of justice and Equality. You love the cheap labor, you hate us."

MQ says:

No, change is good when it is for the better. If you want to find a place at the table, I suggest that you stop acting like a brat and join the rest of us without the needs and wants, cause quite frankly we are sick and tired of your'e  moaning. YOu love to come here and get a job and then go back to your segregated community where you like to speak your own language and engage in your cultural norms like gang banging, moaning about the white invaders and gaming the system....The hard reality of it, I know but the truth....We don't hate you, we don't want to live like you....I don't want my kids going to schools were gang bangers are mixed in with nerds and I don't want to live around parents who could not be arsed in going to a PTA meeting. SO love you are welcome to the table as long as you start adapting the healthy cultural values that has made this country great!

"The dying whale whips, flails and thrashes about violently as it holds on to dear life. But the fact remains, it is dying, and from its ashes a new one will emerge. In one word, oneness. Its either that, or its the end of the world as we know it. Either way, we are ready."

MQ says:

I think love you are a bit of a nut case....Ya surly need to get out more in the world...

I neither fear you nor do I worry about your race...skin has nothing to do with the intelligence or character of a person.... YOUR oneness is not going to happen, we are all different and we all have different out looks, passions and values in this world and thats what makes out interesting. It only when human being expect other human beings to take care of them from a lack of self control, responsibility or drive in this life is a real drain on the rest of us....You obviously have a misguided view of this world and I suggest you look at the history of this world instead of chicano studies and see that your are not the only people who realized that to find a place in this world, ya have to work for it, fighting for it does not work!
