Prince Plays Three House of Blues-Sunset Shows Tonight, Cubensis Throws a Hissy Fit

prince-promo.jpg

This morning, Prince announced that he's performing the next three shows of his Welcome 2 America Live: 21 Nite Stand tour, all at the House of Blues Sunset (albeit at different spots within the venue). Tickets went on sale at Ticketmaster.com and LiveNation.com. The Music Hall show will be at 8 p.m., the Jazz Café at the Porch Restaurant show at 11 p.m. and a private charity event in the Foundation Room at 1 a.m. The tickets are gone (who wouldn't want to see Prince at such an intimate venue?), but at least one group of people are unhappy about it.

Grateful Dead tribute band Cubensis was dumped in favor of Prince tonight; they were booked with a Bob Dylan tribute for a "Dylan's 70th Birthday Party" event. Unfortunately, they were told just last night of the schedule change.

Here's the statement from Cubensis:

"We understand completely why the House of Blues would offer its club to the Purple One, " said Cubensis guitarist Craig Marshall, "but our concern involves why we heard about it so late, and the monumental task of getting word to our fans at the last minute that our show has been postponed."

Cubensis was on stage at the Golden Sails Hotel in Long Beach Tuesday night when they received an urgent call from Joel Gilbert, "Bob Dylan" of noted Dylan tribute Highway 61 Revisited, who was also on the bill with Cubensis for the canceled show.

"Joel stated the Live Nation folks had just informed him of the cancellation, but they could not reveal what or who might have preempted us, " said Marshall. "We all found out the next morning that it was to be three intimate shows with Prince, with ticket prices ranging from $220 to $500. That's a lot of money, but we have not yet been offered any compensation for our inconvenience other than a resceduled date to July 6. We'd at least appreciate tickets to the Prince show!"

The Dead tribute act typically gives away free tickets for their shows: "We're concerned about a large number of people showing up at the club who may not have heard of the postponement," added Marshall.

Here's the funniest part of the release: Marshall learned that Live Nation put out a press release on May 23 teasing information about "a special evening with Prince on Wednesday night" without location information. "This tells me that they knew well in advance about the Prince appearance," said Marshall, "because you can't just put together an event like that overnight."

Guess he doesn't know anything about Prince. Based on how the Purple one's "21 Nite Stand" dates have been announced, it's totally plausible that Prince just told everyone he wanted to perform this week on Monday, and decided on a venue information yesterday. Sorry Cubensis!

Although Cubensis has far less fans than Prince, their fans love their band just as much as Prince's fans do, and for the House of Blues to show such disregard for Cubensis and their fans says a lot about the state of corporate rock these days. For Cubensis to protest that kind of treatment is not a "hissy fit" as the column's headline proclaims, it's an appeal for fairness.

Cubensis!!! That's a comedy show band. They should be banned for eternity.

sounds to me that the venue is pandering to Princes requests and treating Cubensis unfairly.. the fault is with the venue, they could've said no to Prince and he would've had to find another venue (which he would have)..i guess having Prince play improves their "status" as a music venue.. i hope/wish Cubensis find another venue, they and their fans deserve better treatment than this..

I think your headline is unfair and mean-spirited. The band Cubensis had the rug pulled out from under them after weeks of hard work promoting their House of Blues show, for which they get very little pay since it is a free show for their fans. That's why they hand out thousands of free tickets, to thank their fans for their faithfulness in attending other, paid shows. To be bumped at the last minute by a superstar like Prince is ironic and a letdown to the fans who were planning to attend, and disappointing to the band, but to call that disappointment and their attempt to warn the fans of the postponement a "hissy fit" is inappropriate. They work hard at what they do, and have for 20+ years.

"Fairness"!

I think it's fair to say that original-music superstars trump local cover bands any day. What if Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead had decided to play at House of Blues this weekend? Would you think it unfair if Cubensis had been bumped for that?

No disrespect for Cubensis but the idea is that Prince can do whatever he wants and people will just let him do it...whatever anyone else says in protest becomes small in comparison. I didn't mean it mean spiritedly.

On behalf of the band Cubensis: Of course you're right, superstars trump everything. Our gripe was the fact that we received such late notice, at 10pm on the night before the show, with no time to notify our fans of the cancellation. If you read the story above, that's what it's about...concern for the fans and their inconvenience. We went to the show Wednesday at the House of Blues, and we saw some of Prince's crew people, who told us that they knew about the House of Blues show "for weeks". That tells me they could have warned us about the cancellation earlier.
