Top Three WTF Kurt Cobain Tributes: Jared Leto Goes Tasteless, a Hometown Statue and Miley Cyrus Fantasies

Categories: WTF
Ahh, Kurt Cobain, we miss you so. Seventeen years after your death, commemorative Tweets and blogs are standard issue, but some people went the extra mile. (Probably not the extra mile the Nirvana frontman would've wanted, but oh well.)

3. Miley Cyrus was quoted in the Atlantic as saying, "I like Kurt Cobain. [He] is like my dream boyfriend."

2. A statue in Aberdeen? According to NME, a statue in tribute to Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain was unveiled yesterday in Aberdeen, Washington, which was Cobain's hometown. The statue is not of Cobain himself, but of his signature Fender Jag-Stang guitar.

It is situated in a park in North Aberdeen near the Young Street Bridge, which has been a visiting attraction for Nirvana fans as it is mentioned in the lyrics for the band's track 'Something In The Way'. The concrete guitar is eight and a half feet tall and also features a ribbon with lyrics written on it from Nirvana's 'On a Plain'. It reads: "One more special message to go and then I'm done and I can go home."

While a statue of his guitar seems a lot less tasteless than the next tribute, bear in mind that Cobain was miserable because people venerated him--a statue probably would've been the last thing he wanted.

1. Or maybe an actor/ mediocre musician aping his look and songs would've been the last thing he wanted. Here's Jared Leto dressed as Cobain, singing "Pennyroyal Tea" and "Rape Me." It's too painful to watch all throughout, so tell us what you think of it in the comments.

Obviously Leto finds nothing wrong with this; here's what he wrote on the YouTube page.

I heard today (April 5) was the day Kurt passed away 17 years ago. Can't believe it's been that long. So grateful for his contribution and inspiration. Not sure I'd be doing this if it weren't for him. He gave us all permission to create no matter what our skill set and reminded me that dreams are possible. Thanks for that. This made me recall a short piece of film I shot when I heard they were making a film celebrating his life. I made it to explore the character and explore creative possibilities. I never sent it to the studio or to anyone but thought I'd share it now...

just a bunch of questions to every nirvana fan who feels obligated to hate this:- if nirvana is a classic and you hate this because you're supposed to, is that the worst tribute to cobain?- nirvana was as real as music ever got, jared leto (in '94) was in my so-called life, which was about as real as tv ever got... have you seen it?- leto (in 2000) played the drug addict in requiem for a dream so well that it hurts to watch it, have you seen it?- leto (in 2007) played the insane, catcher in the rye obsessed beatles fan who killed john lennon, have you seen it?- so: leto can play a really painfully convincing mental and obsessed killer, a drug addict, a troubled teenager, he's in a band, so he can actually play the guitar and knows a thing or two about what rock n roll can do to your life, do you really think he'd do such a bad job at playing kurt cobain if it had actually gotten that far...

That was really annoying. He's so annoyingly cheesy while Cobain was so amazingly original.

Ugh. Why is Jared Leto such a cheese d*ck?! Him playing Kurt in a film or in any capacity is sick and wrong!! P.S. 30 Seconds to Mars?? Worst. Band. Everrrrrr!!!!!

so true. i don't think cobain would give two shits about it. he rarely liked his own songs in the first place. After reading his journals and his biography, i really doubt he would care about any of this (except for maybe the miley cyrus quote, that is disgusting).
