Former Alice In Chains bassist Mike Starr, 44, was found dead in Salt Lake City earlier today. The cause of death hasn't been reported yet, but cops say they were called to the house at 1:42 p.m. According to TMZ, "Starr was arrested last month for felony possession of a controlled substance. Salt Lake City cops say he had six Xanax pills and six Opana (painkiller) pills when he was busted."
Starr was on the reality TV show Celebrity Rehab in 2009. Alice In Chains was one of the best grunge acts of the '90s; Starr left the group soon after the release of its 1992 album, Dirt. Lead singer Layne Stanley died from a drug overdose in 2002 as well.
Starr's former Alice In Chains band mates Jerry Cantrell and Sean Kinney released this statement: "Jerry and Sean are mourning the loss of their friend and ask that the media respect their privacy--and the privacy of Mike's family--during this difficult time. Their thoughts and prayers are with Mike's family."
