CHART: Sony NGP Vs. Nintendo 3DS Vs. the iPhone 4

NGP vs 3DS v iPhone4 with VS thing.jpg
Within the span of a single week, Nintendo and Sony have set the stage for the latest video-game-system war: the Nintendo 3DS vs the Sony NGP.

The two systems are vastly different from each other, and each will appeal to a completely different audience. The Sony NGP (cheesily short for next generation portable) is a monster of a handheld. It's capable of pumping out almost PS3-quality graphics and has so many features it can put The Homer to shame. Nintendo's 3DS, on the other hand, is slightly more reserved when it comes to the visuals. Sporting a smaller screen and inferior graphics, the 3DS' main draw is its ability to display 3D without the use of those embarrassing glasses. It's probably going to be a lot more affordable, too.

Both of these handheld gaming systems are clearly competing with a new challenger this time around, as well: Apple's iPhone. Taking the market by storm, Apple's iOS devices are now the clear king of portable, casual gaming. Just about everybody these days has an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. How are the iOS devices compared to Sony and Nintendo's latest offerings?

With both portable consoles on the horizon, which is the best one for you? Which console has the best battery life? Which is the most portable? What about internal memory? How will they compare to the iPhone? Which system is the least embarrassing to play in public? Most of the most important questions regarding your purchasing decision will be answered with the following comparison chart, putting the features of Nintendo's 3DS, Sony's NGP and Apple's latest iPhone 4 head-to-head.

(Note that some information regarding the NGP and 3DS has not been announced yet; this chart will be updated as more info becomes available.)

Look at all these frustrated readers screaming at you! I think it's kinda funny. However, I will have to CALMLY explain some common frustrations. See, for one, the iPhone and iTouch don't have any buttons, which makes handheld console-like gaming impossible. Sure, it gets some ports with decent controls, but it doesn't really match up to its competition. Secondly, the battery life is waaaaay shorter when gaming. This is also true for phones; when I play games on my phone, it drains so much battery that it's dead in about 30 min. Yeah, I know, my phone is crap. Also, if you are embarrassed to play a portable gaming system in public, then don't get one. See, usually you take portable systems WITH you, so you kinda have to be in public to play it PORTABLY. The 3DS graphics are, admittidly, closer to Wii graphics. They aren't really as good, I'd say, but console-like graphics on portable systems is good.

@ YouSuck:See, the whole problem here is that you are saying that the 3DS, which has 3D GRAPHICS, wasn't just made for 3D. Your reasoning? The graphics are better. Just so you know, 3D visuals ARE graphics. Your comment doesn't really explain what you mean. Also, you are saying you can combine the two screen's resolutions. That is dead wrong. For one, if you were able to combine them, it would be 720, not 800. For two, the 3D, when turned up to max, cuts the top screen's resolution in half, which would put it even further down to 520. For three, one screen is one screen, and two screens aren't one screen. You can't combine the resolution for both screens, because they are different screens. Thus, the max resolution is 400/240 (with no 3D) on the top, and 320/240 on the bottom.

Also go double check the res. on the top screen of a 3DS. What you put is for each, not overall. Overall your looking at 800*240 which isn't that bad.

Your chart is so fricking insulting! You are just a f***ing Apple Fanboy! Heck I bet people are embrassed to be seen out in public with you. I'm gonna play my 3DS out in public. Oh and change the battery life for the iPhone, you purposely used the life for if you do nothing but chat or text on it. Put the life for gaming on it. Also the 3D on the 3DS isn't just the main point. They up the graphics for it. It has Wii and maybe even 360 like graphics depending on how the developers choose to go about it. Heck just stop comparing you little iPhone to real true handheld gaming devices. People like you royally pi** me off!

The 3ds' graphics look like a PS2?? That is some crazy talk. Have you ever played a PS2 game? And have you seen the gameplay trailers for the 3ds? They look like a Wii or Xbox360 with all their shaders. Lower resolution but they look amazing for a handheld. Nothing like a PS2 in the slightest.

And you can play iphone 4 games for 38 hours? That is also a lie. You can leave your Iphone on for maybe 30 hours if you aren't using it, but if you play games that are demanding you might get 8 hours out of it.

Check your facts.

Battery life on the iphone 4 is much less if you are actually playing a game on it. The batter life is less than 10 hours if the game has good graphics. If you're comparing video game systems you may as well reflect the battery life when it is actually playing a game.

its embarising to play something that was designed to be a handheld?...*i would compair the 3ds to a wii in graphics not a ps2*the ngp is going to look better than ps3 due to it haveing a smaller screen *why dose a handheld gaming device need gps *playing touch based games is hell i own a droid and the only thing i can play comfortably is Zenonia/GBA,SNES emulators

Interesting chart, don't understand why so many of the 3DS' tech. specs are unknown though. I own an iPhone, but only play old PC DOS games on it through an emulator. I have yet to find an iPhone game I am willing to pay for and play on a touch input only device. I'm getting a 3DS for sure, so I guess I have 2/3 of the next generation portable systems covered! Happy times. :-)

look i take no sides when it comes to technology but the 3ds is not even close to ps2 graphics. And it has may be 200 to 300 megabytes of ram i don't know and does not have 1 ghz ARM. compared to the NGP witch is not listed has 2 ghz ARM and to say that a 3ds has graphics capability of even a ps2 let alone a 360 is on crack to be honest more like a ps1 or psp the first one. Also that the 3d on 3ds does really work when i look at it it looks like blurry images to be honest so what i am saying is where close to just eye 3d but not that close at the same time. And for the final truth the 3ds is not in the same league period. And for the iphone it is meant for music not games.
