Gettin' Made: August Craft Classes

Categories: Gettin' Made

The last month of summer is upon us, and if you're looking for a way to get your learn on before heading back to school next month we've got you covered with a whole slew of craft classes available in and around Orange County!

Look at all the great things you can learn how to make at The Urban Craft Center in Santa Monica this month!

Santa Monica's Urban Craft Center never disappoints with a schedule chock full of new skills to pick up. This month includes more basic feeling classes like Candlemaking, Intro to Knitting, and Embroidery 101, as well as more advanced-sounding, exotic classes like creating jewelry that has a scientific molecular feel, Circuit Bending 101, and a mysterious class called Trapunto. The class description describes Trapunto as a "quilting technique right out of the 70's", where students will create a panel with several raised images within it. After the jump, more crafty classes taking place this month in Orange County (and beyond).

There's fresh summer-feeling workshops being held at The Road Less Traveled in Santa Ana this month, too. Take a walk and learn about foraged foods or reconnect with nature by signing up for the combination writing workshop and picnic. Feeling a little more ambitious? Sign up to learn how to weld a garden sculpture from scrap metal! Click here for The Road Less Traveled's complete class listings. (Disclosure alert - Delilah Snell of The Road Less Traveled is significantly othered with OC Weekly's own Gustavo Arellano.)

The Art Bar in Santa Ana has also got some great workshops cooking for this month! Learn how to make image transfer jewelry, get started on journalling with the Vision Journal workshop series, or make a gameboard collage. There's also a slew of more free-form drop in dates and mini workshops available to fit your busy schedule! Click here for The Art Bar's complete event schedule.

Don't forget to check out Seed People's Market in Costa Mesa as well for your craft technique learning needs. This month classes in collage pendant jewelry, handmade paper, and homemade bitters (to add to tasty happy hour drinks!) are among the available classes. Click here for Seed People's Market's complete August calendar.

A little further to drive but completely worth the trip, Handmade Galleries in Sherman Oaks will be hosting an Intro to Art Clay Jewelry class this Saturday, August 7 from 12-4pm. The class will be led by Linda Thibodeaux of Solstice, LTD, and will cover everything from tool use and techniques, to firing, polishing and oxidizing. To reserve your spot for this class, call Handmade Galleries at (818) 382-3444. If this Saturday's workshop date doesn't fit your schedule, don't fret! They'll also be offering the class on September 19 and October 23.

Learn how to make a silver pendant like this one at Handmade Galleries this weekend!
Do you have a place you like to take craft classes at in the Orange County area? Show 'em some love and mention them in the comments here, so I can include them in the monthly craft class listings!
