• First thing with Apple is that you don't buy as of late first generation stuff. Apple changed stuff around and you'll see that their next incarnation of the phone either the white version or the so called "iPhone 5" will be minor fixes and a little bit here and there. I have a 3GS and I don't see much incentive to lock up to the carrier I'm currently on that I dislike so I can flash what is essentially a phone.

From what I see they are missing the point of what you're saying. Maybe a more appropriate title would be reasons not to upgrade instead. I own an iPhone 3GS, and have no need of the new iPhone4, since all I really want is the iOS4 anyway. Till there are REAL groundbreaking features, I'll consider it.

• what a lot of people dont get is the first iphone was built in 2002 apple had it for almost 5 years before the release date. the biggest problems is they could not find any network in the world that could support the phone, if tomorow you took verizon and combine it with att's network and try to make face time a reality trough 3g or 4g or what ever other than wifi, everything would crash, also another thing i think the face time is a feature that should only be kept wifi, people kill other people texting and driving, face time would make thing even worse. • @Peter Mai I'm just curious if you have actually had some in-person time with the iPhone 4, or if your opinion has been based entirely on the information provided in the keynote and Apple's website. From what I understand pictures and words don't do the iPhone 4 justice. You have to hold it and see it in person to appreciate what it is and can do. I personally haven't had a chance to see one in person, but I DO look forward to the opportunity.

• I think many of you guys are missing the point of this article. I'm surprised there're so many angry, childish, and racist comments over an opinion of a phone. First of all, I'm not bashing Apple and the iPhone. I'm a huge iPhone fan, and I have been for a long time. There isn't a moment of my life that I'm away from my 3GS for more than a few hours. I didn't intend to piss anyone off, especially Brandon "I'm also awesome" Meixel. However (especially the angry Apple fanatics), take it easy. It's an opinion. The point that I was trying to make is that the iPhone 4 isn't worth the upgrade. It's mostly a prettier version of what I (as a 3GS owner) already have. Most of the new features, such as FaceTime, can be done through better methods. With the iOS4 coming out soon, I'll be able multitask and create folders just like any other iPhone 4 user. My article is not "poorly researched". One of you even said that I was a "Chinese person [who] don know shit". Seriously guys, resorting to racism? I'm not even Chinese. Every bit of information was taken directly off of Apple's own website. Everything else is subjective. My opinion isn't wrong, and neither is yours.

• Okay the iphone has some improvements, but less than amazing improvements. First off the phone was leaked through gizmondo which also was a large letdown. AT&T uses some of the oldest tech for its cell network, and fastest I'm curious as to where that is? And perform calls and surf internet at the same time is possible on Verizon, I've done that or was smoking some really awesome cocaine. Point is AT&T's network blocking what the Iphone could be. Android better OS? My opinion yes. Guy next to me, might not be his cup of tea. Google helped develop a large portion of the iphone OS, and they run strikingly similar scripts. The open source is great for myself, because I don't have to go through a process with apple to see if I get Steve Jobbs approval or not if my app is "cool"(apple) enough. Plus my customization is a key benefactor and the linking of igoogle w/ my android phone is free, and mobile me is subscription based. There are strengths and weaknesses within both OS's, as for hardware Android based phones that have been released already such as Nexus 1, EVO, and the Incredible already are devastatingly more powerful than the Iphone 4. But, it's up to the consumer, and everyone is entitled to their opinion. And certainly people shouldn't bash this writer because he has one, jeez it's like your a bunch of Democrats or something.

• True HD video is 1280x720 60P at a good bit rate. Getting one number out of four doesn't make it HD. The other formats are 1920x1080i or 1920x1080P. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad for the improvement. It's just too bad that honesty is so yesterday.

• I wonder if the person writing this article actually listened to any of the announcement about the iPhone 4? What about the A4 chip? What about the dramatically improved display? What about the 802.11n wireless? The dual cameras? The very clever use of the case to provide dual antennas? Also, I don't understand the logic behind waiting another year??? In a years' time, yes, I'm sure apple will release a new device. But at that time it will also be only another year till the iPhone 5, then 5S, then 6,... So, basically, on that logic either buy every year or wait forever?? The iPhone 4 is very significantly different from the 3GS and I would say if you want to, and you have the money, then go for it! That's what being an early adopter is all about.

• No one's mentioned the glass! It may be small when thinking about it but how many times do people drop their phones throughout the year? The glass is as hard as sapphire crystal and 30 times harder than plastic. Also everyone has mentioned the resolution bump in the display but it also has optical lamination which eliminates light refraction plus its an IPS display! This may be small things in some peoples views but they give for a better experience. It's at times the small things that can count : )

• I have to agree 100% with the writer. Yes, if I didn't have a 3GS, I'd upgrade, but nothing 'new' with the iPhone 4 is a huge improvement considering a new 2 year contract. I've never had a problem w/ at&t's service in my area, but hate contracts. Yah, the new display is nice, but I've never complained (or heard anybody else) about the current display. If I want to take better photos, I use my camera. video calling is cool, but over wifi - wtf!! who am i gonna call on wifi? my wife - when we're both sitting at home?!?! I use skype alot, but hardly ever use it for video calling. Battery - as long as my current battery lasts the whole day I'm fine. Faster processor - 3GS isn't "slow" (much faster than 3G).

• I don't understand theVideo Calling interest. Video calling over normal mobile network, between providers and between any handset has been available forever (I can think of at least 7 years) all over then world... except the US I guess..??

• This article wasn't meant to bash Apple, why is everyone assuming it is? It's meant to provide reasons to existing iPhone users that upgrading to iPhone 4 may not be for them. Don't lose sight of what the article is about. Also, Brandon, the antennae being on the exterior of the new phone does nothing for it, except make it thinner. Another example of nothing more than a cosmetic upgrade. Obviously the A4 chip wouldn't be used in the article as one of the "reasons to not upgrade" because, quite simply, it's the only good reason to upgrade.

• Dan, Verizon has been doing the same thing for years. VCast? Like WTF is VCast? I can't even load VCast software onto my Mac... which, Is kind of retarded if you ask me - seeing as this doesn't allow me to put music on my phone as I don't own a PC. And yes, Apple owns iTunes and the App Store but all of those Apps are owned by independent developers and they are making a killing off of a system that Apple has set up. My only problem is that not all phones can use the iTunes marketplace!

• If I wait to upgrade next summer... shouldn't I just wait for the summer after that to upgrade? The truth is most of could still be using flip phones and we would be able to function just fine - heck, there was a time when mobile phones were tethered to a briefcase. Technology advances exponentially and the new offerings of the iPhone4 make it a great replacement for the 3Gs and 3G models - especially with AT&T allowing their users to opt out early in order to make such an upgrade. It's just a sexier phone, and who doesn't like sexy?

• For the most part you make some valid arguments but I agree with Brandon on some of the same points. For example, an upgrade from VGA to 720p is hardly a "slight upgrade" and the ability to edit that HD video on the device itself is a first. But I do agree with you that some of the upgraded features may not be necessary for some. I have a 3G and have never found myself wishing I had a video camera to capture moments, however I wouldn't be surprised to find more capture-worthy moments if I had the ability. All that being said, I'm still upgrading, as will most iPhone users. While some may find the 3GS still fits their needs, there are significant enough upgrades to warrant getting a new device in my opinion. Your argument about the phone being upgraded in a year again is true but that should not be a reason to forgo an upgrade. Technology is constantly evolving, if people consistently waited for the next upgraded version of a device people wouldn't be buying anything, if people aren't buying the new technology they're not able to look forward to any new versions. If people aren't looking forward to new versions and aren't buying anything manufacturers have no reason to continue to create new technology. It's an inevitable cycle that you can't really argue against if you want to see technology continue to evolve. So you could actually think of upgrading to the iPhone 4 as an investment in tomorrows technology! • To those few people who are hating on the iPhone because you think it's cool to be against what everyone wants: shut up. The reason people flock to the iPhone isn't because it's Apple. They want it because so far nobody else has been able to create a user experience that compares. Android? Give me a break. It's a wannabe iOS and the only reason more phones have it (and therefore more people have it) is that it's open source. You know what open-source means? It means I can get the source code for the entire OS, write a virus, and since your lovely Android OS supports Flash (which as a designer I've used, and can attest to the absolute shittiness of) have it auto-install when you view corrupted Flash content. As for this upgrade being minor, so is every other upgrade for every other phone EVER. HTC Evo 4G? The only difference is a slightly better camera (shitty image sensor, it takes terrible photos for an 8mp camera), the 4G antenna (woo! now you can use Sprint! and... yeah), and a screen that is larger than the iPhone's but has lower resolution. And it doesn't even have built in storage for music. So please, iPhone haters, get a grip on reality and accept that products sell when they're actually GOOD, and acting like the best selling phone on Earth isn't good is like pretending Obama only got elected through trickery and deceit. He was elected fair and square because America is more liberal than conservative. The iPhone is selling better than any Android phone because it's a better phone. Deal with it.

• A 4X increase in screen resolution is not a "minor" upgrade. If you're someone who actually looks at your screen, this is a huge deal. The screen has always been a primary advantage of the iPhone.

For me, video recording in 720p on my phone is completely unnecessary, and I'm fine with the number of pixels on the screen. Wi-fi limited video chat doesn't seem to make any damn sense whatsoever to me - the only thing I'm mildly interested in is the upgraded antennae as the reception on iPhones is way below standard. The Snapdragon process, already in a handful of phones, will be placed into that many more in the coming weeks. This just means that people have more alternatives to Apple now. • I keep hearing how awful AT&T is but in the area I live and commute it's fine. Never have problems. Don't drop calls; always get data connection. Also, even though I use my iPhone daily for a bunch of stuff, I checked my data and my biggest month is 133MB. That means for my family plan (3 iphones) AT&T is now the cheapest. Don't be silly. The display, speed and camera updates make it definitely worthy of upgrade.

• Oh, and I nearly forgot - iPhone 4 now supports the 802.11n wireless networking protocol, just like the iPad. This is definitely an essential upgrade for those of us that have completely adopted the n specification and don't want 802.11g devices down-throttling our networks. That's a game changer right there and you didn't even list it!

• I'm sorry, but this has got to be one of the most uninformed, knee-jerk, Apple hating articles I've read recently. I NEVER comment on posts like this but felt entirely compelled to today based on the utter lack of research put into this article. Let's start with not mentioning Apple's own A4 chip powering the device. That's easily the most compelling upgrade in the phone. It's an incredibly powerful and efficient mobile chip that is going to make the multitasking features of the new iOS4 work as if silk and butter had a child. The Retina Display is no small upgrade. The pixels are so dense that you won't even be able to discern actual pixels on the screen with the naked eye. Which segues into my next point, the 720p video camera! Just a bump? Are you kidding me? How many other mobile phones out there can record and edit in 720p HD resolution with the grace and ease of iMovie? (Hint: it's just iPhone 4). Other phones have had flashes for years, and Apple finally puts one into the iPhone, quieting the cries of the 10's of millions of owners of them. Apple clearly is onto something with extending mobile battery life with their new combo of the A4 chip and new battery technology - this will also quiet the same cries. Sure, we all know AT&T sucks. Badly. As in the worst. But Apple have done their best to work with what they've got by integrating the new antennae into the exterior of the iPhone's case - which you also didn't mention. I don't see a problem with FaceTime being only available over Wifi, because Apple wants things to "just work", and if you have to rely on AT&T's 3G connection, well, it "just won't". And are you really complaining that "oh, another iPhone will come out in a year so why bother"? So will every other Brand X device from any tech company, the point here is that you'll have the best mobile phone the world has to offer for as long as it is the best - which in Apple's case turns out to be a year. Not surprising given then half life of technology in the information age. Shame on you, Peter Mai.
