K-Pop Viral Sensation Wonder Girls Coming to House of Blues Anaheim

Remember back in 2007, when kids all around the world were posting videos of themselves doing the Crank Dat Soulja Boy dance?

The very next year: The Wonder Girls' "Nobody" dance. The dance sensationalized by the South Korean pop girl group consisted of a few demure movements, some hand gestures, some  clapping--and it swept all across Asia, unbeknownst to most of us Americans, too busy mastering how to Superman that ho.

A quick search on YouTube reveals over 12,000 videos of fans performing their own takes on the dance. Like the following from those world-famous dancing Filipino inmates:

There's also the remarkably en pointe one by the Thai school boys with over three million views:

Anyway, after juggernauting to success in Asia, the Wonder Girls wanted to do what many other Asian pop stars have attempted to do and failed miserably: Breakout in America. They had some opening spots for big pop draws here in the States: Jordin Sparks, even the Jonas Brothers, and appearing on FOX's So You Think You Can Dance.

And no one (really) cared. Call it the Asian pop crossover curse, but most Americans have yet to buy the act, despite the creepy obsession with all things Asian. Then again, the Wonder Girls' prescription of pop music might just be a bit too robotic and homogenized for American pop culture, where pop music has evolved dramatically since the '90s. While "cute" rules the roost in Asia, overt (and shameless) sexuality is still the winner stateside... no matter how bad that "Nobody" tune will get stuck in your head. But that's not stopping the Wonder Girls.

The Wonder Girls have just announced a date at the House of Blues Anaheim, with fellow Korean popstars 2pm, another popular Asian act with a devoted fanbase who have no fucking chance of making it in mainstream America--culture clash, etc.--if that's their aim.

 Exhibit A:

Okay, so they're apparently parodying some other group there, but you know.

The Wonder Girls perform with 2pm at the House of Blues Anaheim, 1530 S. Disneyland Dr., Anaheim, (714) 778-2583; www.hob.com. Sat., June 12, 7 p.m. $50-$200. All ages.
