The Robster!

Rob Schneider...the man, the myth, the stand-up legend?

Okay, maybe that's overstating the case. Still, between "The Richmeister" from SNL, Deuce Bigalow, and the guy who says, "You can do it!" in The Waterboy, Schneider has carved out an odd little niche for himself in our comedy consciousness.

Returning to his stand-up roots, Schneider is on a cross-country comedy tour and ready to take on the big dogs. He's at the Brea Improv for three nights, starting Thursday (no foolin').

OC Weekly
(Ali Lerman): Your birthday is on Halloween; which do you think is worse, having a birthday on April 1 or having it on Halloween?

Rob Schneider:
I think April Fool's Day. No one's going to take you seriously. Having a birthday on Halloween is pretty cool. My parents were kind of manipulative though. They'd say, "You know Rob, all of these people are dressing up for you!" Straight up, they were trying to mess with my mind a little bit.

Did they always give you candy?

Yes, but I didn't realize what sugar does to your system then. I'm realizing now that I was poisoned my whole childhood.

You've done it all so; acting, stand-up, writing, directing... which do you like best?

Well, right now I'm putting all my eggs into stand-up. It has been really hard and I take it real serious. I want to be better than Chris Rock by the end of the year. That's my goal. I'm on his tail and I got him in my sights!

How has the return to stand-up gone for you?

I love it, and I wanna get really good at it. I'm having more fun with it than I ever did! Really, stand-up is great but the flying and getting up to do radio and TV shows, it's tiring!

Do you do any material with your famous characters from SNL?

I actually don't, so I hope I don't disappoint people! I talk about stuff that is happening now in the world and in my life. I haven't been on SNL for 16 years; most kids in America weren't even alive then. That was a fun time though. People who come out will really enjoy the show.

You just aged me because I've followed you since SNL! How do you humor the "kids" of today?

You can't be afraid to shock and offend, it takes a lot now. You shouldn't aim to shock and offend, but these days, people have seen everything.

Why do you think people are so quick to take offense these days?

I honestly don't care, because I don't have a problem with what people get offended by. I don't think anything should be off-limits in comedy. It's not how far you wanna go, it's how you get into it. Comedy is a wonderful manipulation.

The great philosophical questions are these: Who started it? What do we do with it? Who is going to clean up? Is it serious? If life serious? It can't be! Of course not!! If you are just going through life all serious, what a depressing world it would all be!

You sound like Confucius right now.

I actually prefer Bodhisattva. He's the protégé of Buddha.

I'll have to look into that, but I'm a Jew. You're half Jewish, right?

You should! Yeah, half Jewish, but I'm a Buddhist. Zen Buddhism isn't a religion though or a philosophy. It's just a way of looking at the world and interpreting it in a healthier way. Avoiding fundamentalism and fanaticism. Buddhism is the middle way. I enjoy it!

I saw the trailer of Grown Ups on your website and I can't wait to see the movie! When will it be out?

Thank you! It comes out June 25 and stars Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, David Spade, Kevin James, and myself. It's good.

Are you sick of people coming up to you and saying, "You can do it!!"

Ah, I don't worry about it. It's fine!

What is the key to having a long-running career like yours?

Just to not worry about what other people think. I do it for [myself], and try to make my friends and myself laugh. I'm still having fun.
