Show of the Day: the New Limb at Gypsy Lounge, Lake Forest

Categories: show of the day

Costa Mesa quartet the New Limb write warm, introspective originals that delicately draw from indie rock and the kind of freak folk being played by Pacific Northwest kids sporting lumberjack attire and bushy beards. The New Limb's songs float along dreamily while remaining rooted in tight structures. And they have a sharp ear for mash-ups. Listen here to the way "Bizarre Love Triangle" eases into a gentle rendering of the Cyndi Lauper classic "Time After Time." On the same MySpace page, you'll find the foursome rocking out with angular, distorted guitar riffs on the rollicking "Cycle Mother Earth Cycle." Plus, you gotta love an indie rock act that does such a sweet cover of the Band's "the Weight."

If you go, bring a toy for the Orangewood Children's Foundation. Heard Mentality previously wrote about the New Limb here.

The New Limb w/Union Line/Parade of Lights/Brother Luke and the Comrades/DJ Blacq Shampoo, Gypsy Lounge, Lake Forest, Today, 9 p.m. Free, 21+
