You don't get much more roots reggae than the Maytals. The group is credited with being first act to use the word "reggae" in song. Written by leader Toots Hibbert, "Do the Reggay" came out in Jamaica and then the U.K. in 1968. My favorite Maytals song, "Pressure Drop," appears on the 1972 Harder They Come soundtrack, the most important reggae album to buy after you memorize each track on Bob Marley's Legend.
In recent years, classic soul-style vocalist Toots has done a fine job of carrying on the Maytals' rich legacy adespite being the only original member. Chance to win free tix after the jump.
