People from all over are reacting to the departure of Indie 103.1 from southern California airwaves, including the folks over at Bonneville-owned, LA-based
triple-A station
100.3 The Sound, who sent these words over from their general manager and program director:
"We have always had respect for Indie's stance on music and the overall independent feel of the radio station. In a sense we too have tried to foster that spirit of independence at "The Sound" by playing a wide diverse musical playlist much like Indie was able to accomplish in a different way. In L.A. though there is only so much you can do with a limited signal. This is an unfortunate day for the creative end of our business."--Peter Burton, general manager.
"This is a sad day for FM radio. The Sound's music may be a little different, but we'll try our best to keep that same spirit alive."--Dave Beasing, program director.
But don't let radio professionals have all the fun--be sure and let us know your thoughts about Indie 103.1 leaving the airwaves.
Gabriel San Roman says:
I wish Indie 103.1 would stay. KXLU's signal is too weak for me to tune into most of the time and KROQ is an effin' joke that really only plays four bands in rotation when you think of it - RHCP, Sublime, Nirvana and the Foo Fighters! haha
KPFK for all its eclectic music programming has always lacked a true rock show in tune with its inherent rebelliousness...Refused TV when it was still on local television was a place to turn to (and back then it would have made a mighty fine radio show) but now there really is nowhere to go anymore
Media consolidation blues....

Was Indie not generating enough listeners to stay on the airwaves or was this corporate trying to ruin a good thing? No joke, I was an avid fan of Indie and now I'm super pissed because I don't have a station to listen to. What, you whip out a laptop on a freeway? T

Maybe I'm the only one welcoming the demise of Indie as a terrestrial radio station. It had become a shell of its former self the last couple years, sounding more and more like the other corporate driven radio entities out there.
The music lineup playing on the "new" Indie Online has already improved, as it sounds like the "original" Indie. It was good to hear Joe Escalante in his first digital show this morning at Indie.
I, for one, hope they can turn this new online venture into a truly viable radio station that can actually generate enough revenue to guarantee staff and DJ's a paycheck. Unfortunately, internet radio is an entirely different business model with no proven path for success. Yet.

Nothing can be worse than when we lost KNAC. I was too young when KMET was around but I heard it was a good station.

Too bad that Indie bit the dust with all the other great radio stations who came before it. Typical LA ideology / crap: If you think and design outside of the corporate, commercialism-shoved-down-your-throat box, you wind up walking a very thin line that can be cut at any time by some suit with dollar signs for pupils.
What's even more pathetic is that pretty much all of these posts have mentioned not having another viable station to turn to. Just goes to show you that commercialism-shoved-down-your-throat has seriously infested the programming of the Not So World Famous Anymore KROQ. This station shined at one time. They were the station that introduced me to AC/DC, Scorpions, Judas Priest, and Quiet Riot with Randy Rhoads, just to name a few. Yes KROQ was playing this stuff long before KMET, KLOS, et al had the balls to play their music. And no need to elaborate on how KROQ pretty much lead the Punk an New Wave movement in Southern California during the late 70's and throughout the 80's. What they've now become is a true pity indeed.
I welcome The Sound and their courage to step up to the plate. Let's just hope the suits don't kill it off like all the other great stations that have come and gone.
